the 'troublesome word pairs' for HESI A2 Grammar

Nursing Students HESI

Published

So, I just took my HESI A2 exam (again, I had to retake it for a diff school) and I wanted to share a few things while they were still fresh.

I'm actually feeling pretty good about how I did! Thankfully I was prepared for a section that really surprised me by how huge it was - commonly misused words. This is under the grammar section and is one of those things you just need to buck up and master before the exam.

I decided to write a little thing for you guys since I had the advantage of using the 'ready for the Hesi' study guides.

I've added my little breakdown below,ok, here it goes but it's also written here on this article from pocket prep: 1

Nice job summing up some of the most annoying misused grammar in our language.

I agree with you. I understand how people whose first language is not English could struggle, but it absolutely amazes me that high school graduates born in the US could enter college not having all of that down. What the OP has noted above are examples of very basic grammar. The fact that so many adults born and raised in the US seem to have no clue about them is an indictment of our education system.

Something I see CONSTANTLY on AN that was not noted above:

One patient = patient.

Two of them = patients. NOT "patient's."

The apostrophe love has really gotten out of hand these days. Poor grammar is rampant.

"You're patient's are so sweet. There mom's and dad's are so supportive of the nurse's and the doc's. Your really lucky to have staff who's work ethic is so strong."

Gah....

We all make typos from time to time. But true ignorance of very basic principles is woefully common.

I just saw a YouTube video titled "Boy see's colors for the first time."

Apostrophe love.

Yes, grammar is big isssue. But there's also our failing public education school system. Can we really blame the kids? We definitely shouldn't blame teachers. There's something gone awry in U.S. schools and I know it has to do with funding.
