I just took the Hesi A2, this is my review.

Nursing Students HESI

I wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I definitely recommend studying well in advance and do not take the Hesi if you have not completed Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2. I do recommend Elsevier's study guide, but only for certain sections. The pocket prep Hesi A2 app for Android and Apple was also awesome because all its questions came straight from info in the Elsevier guide. Totally worth the $9.99 for all 1035 questions.

I had 4 hours and 25 minutes to complete the test and finished in 166 minutes and 28 seconds. I was required to take the following sections:

Anatomy and Physiology

Math

Grammar

Reading Comprehension

Biology

Critical Thinking

Learning Styles

Anatomy and Physiology:

This section had 30 questions. All the questions were pretty generic. I had a couple histology questions and a couple questions about certain muscles that were pretty specific, but by process of elimination I was able to get the answer. I would study what the Elsevier guide has plus all your notes from your AP classes. There were no questions on the test that were foreign to me and all the question came from info I was taught in my AP classes or from the Elvesier guide.

Score: 96%

Math:

This section had 55 questions. This section was pretty easy. If you study straight from the Elsevier guide you will make a 100%. It was mostly fractions, conversions, and 1 question about military time. You do receive a calculator on the computer for this section. I was also allowed scratch paper from the testing center.

Score: 96%

Grammar:

This section is 55 questions. All the questions were basic grammar question and posed the question: Which sentence is not grammatically correct? You need to know the basic parts of speech, and the tricky words like further/farther, lay/lie, teach/learn, among/between, etc. This is another section you can study straight from the Elsevier guide and the Pocketprep app and make a good grade on.

Score: 94%

Reading Comprehension:

This section was the hardest for me. I am more science/math minded. It consists of 55 questions. There are four subsections to this section. They are Meaning-word use, Implications, Conclusions, and Understanding. It consisted of reading a short paragraph and then asking questions about the paragraph. Such as: What does the word _____ mean in the paragraph? or What does the reader imply from the paragraph? The Elsevier guide and the Pocketprep app is great for this section also.

Score: 94%

Biology:

This section has 30 questions. I haven't taken a college level biology course and the last biology course I took was in high school in 2005. The Elsevier guide is okay for this section, but you definitely need to study this section. I would recommend Kahn academy and anything basic Biology 101. The questions I had dealt with cell components and their functions,microscopes, transport methods, hierarchy systems and other basic Biology terms.

Score: 88%

Critical Thinking

This section has 30 questions.This is one of those sections that you can't really study for. It's really nurse focused and how to critically think about what you should do. The questions give you a scenario with a patient. There is no wrong answer to the questions, just "more correct" answers. You need to know how to prioritize patients and just critically think about how you would treat a patient. Remember that you can't administer meds without a prescription and stay within the scope of practice for a nurse. Remember the ABCs.

Score: 980/1000

Learning Styles

This section had 19 questions. This is another section that you can't study for, because there are no wrong answers. It is pretty much a personality test.

Learning style: Auditory/Global

Composite: 94.33%

STUDY STUDY STUDY!

Do not wait until right before applying to your program to take this. Take it directly after finishing A&P so that everything is fresh on your mind. It will definitely benefit you since science sections seemed to be more important when applying to nursing programs.

Do we need the Biology section and the Learning styles to apply to UT-Houston??? They didn't mention those sections at the information session.

No, you don't need biology or learning styles. You just need A&P, math, vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar and critical thinking. Some schools require everything, so when you take the test you have the option to take all sections. You just need to skip what you don't need.
