Walk the Stairs at Work Challenge Thread

This thread is a challenge to all nurses to make this simple change, to start walking the stairs at your workplace instead of using the elevator. This is to improve your health and fitness.

If you think, oh no, it's too much effort, I work hard enough as it is, then think again. You'll have more energy if you become more fit. You'll feel better, not worse.

Try it for a week, just commit to definitely doing this for one week and take it from there. After that week, see if maybe you'll want to do it for another week, or maybe for a month.

Hello Firestarter!
The Military has been encouraging people to "Walk Up One, Down Two" for a while
People think "How can I continue an exercise routine while at work?" and the simple answer is: if one can take the stairs two or three at a time that is a perfect way to incorporate lunges into your work-day!

i always, ALWAYS used to take the stairs.
now that my 35yr smoking habit has taken its toll, i get too sob now.
but once my 3 remaining packs are gone, i am quitting once and for all.
then i plan to work on rehabbing my lungs and endurance.

fs, this is a great idea!

I always take the stairs when I'm in a building with stairs. My hospital is one story - no stairs.

However, our home has stairs to the basement (where the washer/dryer and wood stove are) and stairs up to the second story where the kids rooms are (of course all 3 of my older kids are gone and my youngest is downstairs on the main floor with us).

This is a great idea - and the truth is many times I beat the elevator up anyway.

I'm in, I always take the stairs but I usually don't push it when I'm on them. I'm going to start charging up them now.

I forgot - there are stairs to my classroom . . . . and I do charge up them. Thanks for reminding me.

My nursing home is a single-story building, but like Steph, I live in a house with some really wicked stairs---they have a steep rise and a short run. Until I lost a little weight, they hurt my knees too bad to use them except when absolutely necessary, but now I try to go up and down a little more often, and I've started using the lowest step for calf stretches and toning (I have some issues with balance).

On my lunch break I will drink a can of V8, then I will run up and down the stairwell at work for a little exercise. Refreshes me greatly and I am ready to go back to work. My hospital is 9 stories high. Wonderful workout.
