The purpose of this thread is for us to support one another, not be defensive of our choices. This will not be a vegetarian/meat eater bashing arguing thread. There's plenty of other forums for that.
Thanks.

Did you read my post, or just jump to a conclusion? I would suggest re-reading it. I wasn't argumentative in the slightest. I never said I've had all negative experiences with vegetarians, just an observation about some that I've had experiences with. And never asked anyone to defend thier choice. In your response you refer to me as a "meat eater", why not a "water drinker" or a "shoe wearer"? Or perhaps "someone who's not a veggie". I think the title of this thread should read "Vegetarians only, because no one else has an opinion that matters anyway" Have a nice day, I won't dare offend anyone by posting on this thread again.

Re: The Vegetarian Thread
Great idea for a thread
I'll put my hand up as being a vegetarian as well, not a vegan though. However I will only buy the free range eggs and never ever the cage or barn laid eggs!!!
For me it is a case of morals I guess you would call it, the thought of eating a living creature makes me feel nauseous!
Where I was working the only place to get food was the shop opposite the hospital, and the only hot food you could get their was chips....so I ate a lot of chips
I start at a new hospital in a week, and they have a cafe so I am really hoping they will have better choices (although I really do love hot chips LOL). I am never organised well enough to make lunch/dinner at home every day/night

Re: The Vegetarian Thread
Another flexitarian here! I've been one for about two years. I originally tried the veggi lifestyle to lose weight and I was very successful. However, I learned that I felt much better physically and it became a way of life for me.
My husband is a meat and potatoes guy and I'm the salad/veggie freak.....lol
Being hispanic, I eat lots of traditional meals which are mainly legumes (all types of beans, lentils, chickpeas, hominy, etc) and rice cooked many diff ways. I use lots of spices and herbs in my cooking.
My favorite market products are Quorn and Morningstar Farms.
My favorite fruit is hass avocados. I eat all variety of nuts too. I do eat cheese. As for milk, I love rice milk!
Nice to 'meet' you all
Edit: My weakness has always been chicken wings and I do ocassionally join hubby.

Re: The Vegetarian Thread
My daughter is a vegetarian. I guess that makes me a "flexitarian" since I rarely eat it myself, not for health or moral reasons (I don't really have a problem with meat eating), but because I am too lazy to cook separate meals, and I am not so attached to meat-eating, anyway.

Re: The Vegetarian Thread
When my daughter went vegetarian last year, I decided to try it out too. (I like to experience the things that are most important to my kids.)
I was unable to eat the meat substitutes-apparently soy triggered my IBS-so I mainly ate cooked beans with whole grains, veggies, fruit, and eggs. Looking back, I think I probably didn't eat enough of the beans, though.
I did it for about 2 months, and found that I was incredibly tired most of the time. I must qualify that statement by adding that I had also just started a full time 8 week nurse-intern position. How much of that was due to diet and how much was due to the stress of the internship? I don't know. I would like to try it again but think I will wait until I have adjusted to my new work schedule; I will be starting my new career as a med surg nurse in June.
I currently eat one or two vegetarian meals a day; making the change gradually seems to be a better option for me. I eat chicken or tuna about once a day and have an egg about three times a week. I eat a serving of beans at every meal and also use peanut butter, nuts, and yogurt as protein sources.

Re: The Vegetarian Thread
I am working on eating more veggies and fruits - it's hard when you live with someone who does not express any interest in cutting out meat...
I need to eat a high fiber diet so vegetarianiam is really helpful for me.
Thanks for starting this thread Tweety!!

Opinions matter, but is it always necessary to express them? An example might bethat I don't believe that Jesus rose from the dead and so why would I go to the prayer thread and express that? It's just not necessary. I allow them their corner of this website in peace.
You are more than welcome to post on this thread. I just don't think you've been respectful to the spirit of which this thread was intended, which is for us to support one another in what for some of us is a healthier lifestyle. Obviously not for everyone as veg*ns only number about 1% of the population.
The reason I thought you've had negative experiences with veg*ns is that you stated "It seems that so many vegetarians (especially vegans) have such a holier than thou attitude......" which isn't necessary a positive statement. I apologize if I was wrong.
Myself and other veg*ns have refered to people who aren't vegetarian and eat meat as meater-eaters, so please take it literally, not without any insult. Not hearing my tone, perhaps it sounds insulting to you, but it rolls off my tongue naturally as I'm saying the word "vegetarian".
Do you really honestly think a phrase such as "I'm hoping to be chosen as a winner of the moose lottery this year, I should be able to fill my freezer with one shot! You know the old saying, There's room for all of gods creatures....................right next to the mashed potatoes." belongs in a thread called "The Vegetarian Thread"? I don't and I think it was disrespectful. But no TOS violations so no big deal to me I'm thick skinned and I understand you statement was tongue in cheek and meant for a laugh rather than insult.
Thanks for listening and I hope you understand.

Are "hot chips" what we call "french fries" in America? I'm learning new phrases from for food from you guys. LOL There was a stink here when it came out that Burger King or McDonalds used beef in their fry oil. Vegetarians were highly upset. But they've since changed. Good luck with the new cafeteria. Dayshift here has a nice salad bar where I work, so I can always get veggie food relatively easy. They used to sell veggie burgers but whenever I asked for one they would look at me like I ordered fishheads and claimed "we're all out". Originally Posted by Jessy_RN Another flexitarian here! I love beans. You're Peutro Rican right? I love sazon, sofrito and stuff like that for beans.....yummy. Wish you were close by to cook for us. Good for you. Many kids are going vegetarian and it causes a lot of conflict at home. Originally Posted by missnina When my daughter went vegetarian last year, I decided to try it out too. (I like to experience the things that are most important to my kids.)

Sounds like you have a relatively healthy diet. Good luck with going more veg when it feels right for you. Med-surg nursing is very stressful so it helps to be in good shape. Thanks for starting this thread Tweety!!
It is tough when there's a meateater in the house. My ex ate meat, but I did all the cooking and he eventually liked what I cooked. He never went veg, but he discovered he actually liked vegetarian food, especially veggie burgers.

Re: The Vegetarian Thread
It really has been tough - my sis put up with my strict meatless state for about a week and then had a revolt - she just cannot go without meat. So now, I still eat meat, but I definitely eat less, and she does too - now if we eat chicken, we split a breast instead of having one apiece, etc.
But overall, I have to say, I do feel better when I eat more fruits and veggies.

Aren't french fries what you get from Mcdonalds? Really skinny bits of potato fried?
Chips are like that but lots thicker and very yummy, but not very healthy | » - | 337 members
