Working in Honolulu

I am from Canada .Recently,I have been offered a job in Honolu at The Queen's to work as an RN. As a part of the offer was "a month free housing".Unfortunately I need it for 6 months. Does enyone know if it's reasonable to ask for free housing for 6 mo.How much approximatelly it would cost me to rent a studio at Waikiki beach, or how much it is for a shared accomodation. I am getting hired by the hospital not as a travel nurse.I appreciate every person traying to help me with info.
    Thanks.

I imagine a studio near Waikiki to range from 700-1200/month depending on how nice it is... and in Hawaii it does VARY. You might want to look elsewhere though... Waikiki to Queens is almost an hour walk... although the BUS system is VERY efficient, its 2$ one-way and many lines go from Waikiki to Punchbowl/Berentania which is the cross-street for Queens... Parking is horrible.. =)

You will not get six months free housing from any hospital here. Queens gives a $5000 relocation bonus along with 30 days free housing. That's about all you're going to get.

Not only is housing expensive but becoming very hard to obtain---condos that were formerly rentals have been sold in record numbers during the last few years due to the huge increases in real estate prices. The rental market is very tight.

Bear in mind that the cheap (relatively speaking) places can be awful dumps, complete with drug activity and prostitution.

You are better off looking for decent housing a bit away from Waikiki, more towards Queens. You can check out the areas once you are here. It's really hard to evaluate a place over the internet. We have lots of dumps here that are right next to gorgeous condo complexes so even the neighborhood might not give you clues as to whether the place is decent or not.

Queens puts out its own little newsletter that often lists places for rent.

A decent studio will probably run you about a $1000/month and up. You can search for rentals here:

the rent is really expensive here in hawaii. our neighbor has this room for rent ad and it cost $2,500/month for 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom alone. errr...the price is killing me
