University of Hawaii-MEPN PROGRAM...anyone heard about it?

I'm applying for UH MEPN program for Fall 2009. Has anyone heard about the program? It's fairly new but I just want to know what I'm getting myself into...lol. I know overall, nursing school is tough but would like some feedback on the MEPN program itself.

Thanks!

Hi Hollownurse ~ yipes. The 71000 is crazy expensive, for sure. And yes - it will be worth it but the COL is definitely something to consider, so don't write it off (not trying to scare you! I just know that it was a huge adjustment for us, coming back from mainland (CA - which is pricey as well). So just keep it in mind & be realistic about your budget - you don't need the extra stress as the 1st MEPN year will be hard enough.

Anyone have anyone thoughts on scholarships/grants/loans? This is new to me coming back to school, so any input is helpful. Thanks much - and congrats to those who got their acceptance! I'm still hanging in! :) Aloha,

Hi "wewillsee" - thanks for the note & encouragement! Congrats & Good luck to you in the CA program ~ be sure to visit HI on holiday at least! :)

Congratulations to everyone who's been accepted this year. And to those on the alternate list or still otherwise in limbo, don't give up hope. If things don't go your way this year, it might be a good idea to ask the school if they can provide feedback on your application, in preparation for next year. I've heard this is pretty insightful.

I'm happy to say that I've been accepted for the Adult NP track. Now that reality is setting in, I'm also starting to wonder about how to pay for the 1st year. I'm fairly clueless when it comes to financial aid, especially at UH, but I did manage to get my FAFSA in by the March 1st priority deadline. Anyone else apply for aid and hear anything back? I'm just waiting to hear back from UH so I can apply for loans.

I live in Hawaii, so if any of you non-residents have questions about neighborhoods, cost of living, etc., I'm happy to try to help. Looking forward to meeting many of you this August!

Dodgersgirl,

Thanks, me too!

Has anyone gotten a Fin Aid packet yet?

Bluefan,

I'm moving back to HI and def need to find a place. Any sugggestion would be awesome as I'm in CA now.

:D

AjBob,

I got an e-mail from the financial aid office saying that they have received my information and they will verify that I was accepted to the program, but that was it so far.

Hi Margs,

Congrats on your acceptance! A few weeks ago I received the same email from financial aid. I guess we need to wait until after spring break for the financial aid office to process our SIR paperwork. I'm a resident here, but it's still going to be a struggle to pay for the program. By the way, would you mind sharing to which specialty you are accepted?

Blue fan,

Congrats on your acceptance! I too am clueless about financial aid. I hope we can all find an affordable way to fund ourselves through this great program.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all in August!

Hey,

I applied for the APHN track. I don't think that many other people chose that one.

Hi Margs

I applied for that and have been accepted already. I think the paperwork came in the last couple of days and I live in the midwest. Just thought I'd give you heads up, though, like I mentioed earlier, I've been living abroad so the Email I got may have been an exception in addition to a nicety, as they know my situation with mail living in the boonies.

Hey,

Yeah, I got my paperwork for the acceptance the other day too. Congrats!!

AjBob,

I'll keep my eyes open for any leads. I've heard the rental and home buying market is fairly tight, as usual, "in town." Any particular areas you have in mind? I know some folks who are moving soon, and will be looking to put their place on the market--not sure if they're renting or selling. (I'm not in real estate, so unfortunately you're dealing with a strict amateur here :))

BTW, does anyone know where our classes actually will be held? I've always assumed the UH Manoa campus (maybe not for the clinical preceptor stuff), but I've never verified this.

Sorry, one more question--I've noticed this on the UH MEPN website: "Medical Terminology: It is recommended that applicants complete a medical terminology course as additional preparation for the program."

Has everyone completed medical terminology? I haven't taken this before, so it looks like I might be doing summer school!

Margs,

Thanks, I can't wait to meet everyone!!

BlueFan,

I'd be renting, I'd like a housemate that's in the prog. too! I'm going to join the Mepn facebook, so we can all get to know each other a little :D I'll have a small cat that will need to go outside. Makiki was great and close to downtown for clinicals and UH for classes (I think that's where they are).

I have to take micro bio this summer, so I won't have had med term?! :S

Maholo Bluefan!
