so i'm working towards applying for nursing school for spr 2012... That'll give me some time to raise my c-gpa a little bit and to retake my nln. in fact i just took my nln for the second time and got a 125 composite. however i was not able to apply for fall 2011 bc my verbal section i got a 49%tile and i needed the 50%tile on all 3 sections... verbal section is my weak point. i had a 94%tile and 85%tile math and science. it kills me because i studied so hard for verbal and yet i scored so horribly. I'm planning to take it again the third time around hoping i score better than 50%tile for the verbal section. i guess i can use my excuse-english is my second language. is there anything i can do to raise my verbal score??? I used so many books to study for the nln yet still poor score :( should i find a tutor? or should i study vocab books and such? another thing is that my c/gpa is at 2.89 right now. i'm taking two classes at UH right now hoping to get all A's and a anthro class in the summer to bring it up to 3.0. i really don't want to give up nursing school... it's something my heart is set on for a while... i believe my pre-req gpa should be around 3.6 after anthro in the summer. what are my chances of getting into nursing school for spr 2012 if my c-gpa is 3.0 and pre-req is 3.6ish and if i improve on my verbal section for nln the third time around?

I advise that you go to a Nursing Info Session, they're going to clear up a lot of your questions for you regarding C-GPA and PreReq-GPA and NLN scores. I'll be going to the one on May 16.

According to what i've gather from former applicants who've been accepted and have attended Nursing Sessions, It is a point based system in which only 16 of the 34 credits on the applications will be weighed. That 16 will determine your P-GPA. C-GPA will only be looked at in as tie-breaker should the situation occur.

The Minimum to apply is

-C in all courses

-2.5 C-GPA

-have 16 credits of the 34 completed

a)of the 16- 1 zool lecture and lab + one other science completed

b) all other courses must be completed/currently enrolled in at the time of application

-NLN scores of 50% or higher in ALL categories.

a) they pick the highest of your NLN categories of the 3, so say 85 verbal

95 science, 90 math. They'd pick your 95 science to weigh into the point based system.

I am applying for the UHM 2012 Spring program and taking the NLN this May 21. I do regret not taking it earlier and that was a bad decision on my part.

My Stats Are.

Pre-Req GPA 3.75

C-GPA- 2.9(not a typo)

NLN score-TBD

As far as improving your verbal section, Reading books is a good way to improve your vocab and become familiar with the english structure. Read books that are slightly higher then your reading level, when you come to words that you don't understand look them up and write them down and look it up before continuing to read. That should help improve your verbal section!

Don't give up hope! i am positive that you will make it into nursing. If you continue to have the Passion that you have for Nursing, i'm sure you'll get in! i do hope the same goes for me too!

Hey I planning to submit my application for fall 2012 in spring but I don't think I'll be able to get in with my Cum gpa also can you tell me how UH calculates their stupid gpa it was so much lower than how I calculated it. I know they used the plus and minuses. My gpa was a 2.41 but now is a 2.6 it should've been much higher. And I saw how yours is a 2.9 so I was hoping if you could let me know if you got into nursing. Were you applying for UH nursing or one of the community colleges. Also can you tell me what your NLN score will be too? Cause your stats are similar to mine. I didn't take it yet either. I really wish I knew I was going into nursing so I could've saved two years of tuition and not have to worry about my pre req gpa. Thank you and good luck to everyone and hope to see you there one day.

I mean cum gpa

Get a tutor or whatever you need to improve your English. Strong English & speaking skills will be very important as a student nurse and eventually as an RN. You will also be writing many papers throughout school, following APA format. Communication is a vital part of the nursing profession. I cannot imagine how difficult it would be practicing in healthcare in a foreign language, but ultimately it comes down to what's best for the patient. There have been students whose progression through the program have been stalled b/c of communication problems (ESL students).

For GPA advice please read my posts in the many similar threads.

Thank you guys for the thoughtful advice. I do need a tutor but i just don't know where to find them? Right now i just need a tutor for improving reading comprehension for taking the NLN in August. I feel like giving up because my speaking skills aren't up to par. English is not my strong point and is my second language. I feel like i may be one of those ESL students being stalled with nursing school because of communication, writing, and speaking problems. If you guys recommend me of a good tutoring place in Hawaii for english, please let me know. I still haven't given up yet, there is hope!

Hey there,

My GPA is at 3.0 right now and my pre-req now is 3.55. I decided not to take summer school because i have three jobs and i cannot quit right now and i'd rather focus on studying for the NLN which comes up in August. I have not applied to nursing school yet because of my previous NLN score. I wasn't able to apply because my verbal section for NLN was a 49%tile and UH Manoa nursing requires you do apply 50% or above for all three sections. If i do well in my NLN for the third time around, i'm going to apply for spring 2012. If you want to know how UH calculates GPA, see mcubed's posts. Thanks and good luck!

Just got my Entrance Exams Scores!

NLN SCORES- composite 137

Verbal-83

Math -90

Science-97

Hopefully that will make up for my c-GPA

now all thats left is to turn in my application!

jellyishh, it's nice to see someone with so much heart and perseverance. Continue to study hard. I believe you'll get into the nursing program sooner rather than later.

As far as the NLN goes, that was a tough exam, yah? Although the verbal portion was my weakest, percentile-wise (even though I thought it would be my strongest), I have a suggestion to make: learn prefixes, roots, and suffixes. Doing so will enable you to infer meanings of words you have never seen before; and as you know, the NLN throws quite a few of those out there. Since a good chunk of the exam consists of knowing the meanings of words, you'll probably make the most efficient use of your time learning these things, rather than trying to learn individual words or struggling to improve overall reading comprehension--things that will require an investment of years, rather than weeks or months.

Unfortunately, I don't have any book suggestions to help you in your journey, but I'm sure you'll find some by doing a search online. You can also do vocab practice tests, and I don't think they necessarily need to be NLN-related--although I'm sure you can find some NLN-related ones online. Do a search on SAT or GRE vocab practice to find some free drills. In addition, do the practice questions in the Jones & Bartlett Review Guide for RN Pre-Entrance Exam. Good luck!

And NeekoDango, nice NLN score. Good luck to you, too!

Good NLN scores, but if you don't get in ( I sure hope you do), retake it. Better cGPA then me!

HPU is always an option but I advise against it. High Cost, Must Have HPU credits, etc. . HPU is a business first, education facility second (so it appears).

While I was volunteering in Onco/Med Surg @ Kaiser, I had the opportunity to observe KCC, UH, and HPU kids do their clinical rotations. The quality different of the students(and instructors) was obvious just by observing their use of sterile techniques and communication skills. I'll rank the students in this order.

KCC>UH>HPU

I hope you decide to stick with applying to UH! and i hope we both get in!

Just walked in my application @ UH Manoa! turn it in this week everyone!
