Seeking Job In Oahu

U.S.A. Hawaii

Published

Aloha,

My husband and I just moved to Oahu. He is in the military. I have been a RN for one year and have 10 months experience in Med/Surg. I am grateful for that experience but I am ready to pursue more of my passion which is Surgery. I have put in many applications a week ago and have heard nothing in response. I am afraid that none of the hospitals will give me a chance because I don't have the experience. :banghead: Does anyone one out there have any advice on what to say or how to change my resume or Cover letter. I will appreciate anything.

Hi- People comment that it takes longer in Hawaii for personelle to go thru the paperwork on applications. Since your husband is in the military, you would be given preference at Trippler. Where in Oahu did you move?

We live in Kailua

Kailua is a beautiful area.

Try Tripler, you will be given preferance as a military spouse. You cant miss it, is is a huge pink hospital on the hill visable from many areas on Oahu.

The hospitals in Honolulu, or "town" as people in H:nurse:awaii call it, have very limited parking, in fact you have to pay to park. On the east side also is Castle hospital, which has an excellent reputation.

Enjoy Hawaii! Buy the "Oahu Revealed" book, available at Costco, and Borders, to get a real picture of things on the island.

It does take longer; be patient. With over 20 years of experience, it took over two months to start getting job offers; I ended up working agency for a while. (Met lots of great people doing that, too! Everybody knows somebody who works with somebody who knows...you get the picture!!:D) The agency nursing ended up being the "foot in the door" I needed to get the job I was interested in.

Get on the USAJOBS.com website, enter "nurse" and "oahu" and the list will pop up. There is even a periop position posted today. Fill out a resume and apply. USAJOBS has all the job listings for the military and VA, and will email them to you as they are posted. As listed before, you have preference as a military spouse! And you might want to call the contact person/nurse recruiter and let them know you are interested and have a resume online at that website.

And if you want to be trained in perioperative nursing, you might need to already be an employee somewhere, then apply as a lateral transfer into an internship.

Welcome to Hawaii!!

Thank you so much for the replies. Tripler will not review my resume because I don't have a full year of experience, they would not accept the 10 months. You either have to have a full year or a BSN. I have a ASN. So what are some reputable temporary agencies . If I could get some more experience than I could reapply to Tripler. I truly appreciate the feedback. You guys are awesome. :yeah:

Island Nurses is by far the best I have worked with, and I worked with two others. I would definitely call them first.

Is it true that Tripler will take a BSN with no experience? I am a military spouse as well and I am terrified that I won't be able to get a job. We are moving there in November. I am seriously considering getting my BSN if that be the case and I just finished nursing school!

It is just bad luck that we are moving there before i am able to get any experience. I also have another degree in exercise science but I doubt that will help with any nursing jobs. Any advice? Getting a little desperate over here...:(

Tripler was pretty strict about their requirements. You either have to have a BSN or 1 full year experience. My ten months did not count :bluecry1:. I am also thinking about getting my BSN. It is harder than I thought it would be to get a job in HI. My advice is to start applying now.

I'm pretty sure tripler doesn't accept new grads, right? maybe the OP meant they'd only accept her 10mos exp. if she also had a BSN to go with it?
