PAY RATE ISSUE

U.S.A. Hawaii

Aloha everybody...The administrator from a LTC facility in my place (oahu,hi) offered me RN job, but first they will train me as a CNA, after that LPN and then RN... She told me that I don't have enough experience yet (I'm working as a charge nurse from other facility as needed) and requires lots of training. She told me also that they can't afford to pay me the same rate from my other work which is $28. I asked her how much is the starting rate and told me it's $19.50...should I accept it?please help me decide...big thanks!

I have noticed that a number of LTC facilities on Oahu seem to like using this horrible practice when hiring new RN's, and it really irks me! They mainly seem to try this strategy with RN's from the Philippines, from what I have seen. If you are licensed as an RN, you should be hired as an RN at RN pay... not as a CNA, not as an LPN.

All new RN's require on-the-job training to some extent, and they know that. For them to offer you a job as a CNA is insulting, especially given the fact that you have been working as a charge nurse on-call at another facility. I'd let them know that you are looking for a position as a nurse, not a CNA. (My guess is if you take the job, you will be working as a low-paid CNA for a long time--that's what happened to a friend of mine who is an RN from PI. After a few years, she finally told them she was going to quit unless they let her work as a nurse.)

If they won't hire you as a nurse, I'd keep looking...you don't really want to work for a place that treats you like that anyway.

Just my opinion.

Not worth it IMO. Other LTC facilities in Oahu with the state pays better than that from what I've researched by looking on the web and calling the facilities itself. If you have some RN experience, especially as a charge-nurse, go look into ALTRES. They're hiring RN's with experience and they have great pay+benefits.

i give a big thank you to that administrator. at least she is being honest with you!!! which is more than i can say for most administrators. most other administrators make up different reasons. at least she's telling you the truth... it costs too much $$ to train.

should you do it? no one, and i mean no one can make that decision for you. there is only one person on this earth that can decide. you! if you want to accept the offer, say yes. if you want to pass, say no. don't look to others to find your answers. only you can answer that question!

Thats true but you should also ask for advice when the decision is a big one. Geez, throw down the gauntlet or something. The person needs help and yes you should look for wise people to help. Only a fool would make a decision without finding out all of their options. If one doesnt know if its a good offer, find someone that might. Nothing like asking for help and being yelled at!!!

Be careful who's advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than its worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen.

hmmm is the place worth working at? It sucks to work as a NA first, but so many of my classmates that are RN are doing that just to get their foot in the door. Damn economy! $19 is not bad though. I know as a ward clerk at Straub, I am getting $14 and I do have a RN.

How long is your training till you start work as a RN? You should ask about this. If it takes to long to train till your finally doing the RN work, it may not be worth it. Will you be applying else where too?

Do what I'm doing. Go to grad school in the meantime as a new grad. I'm going to Family Nurse Practitioner school since I can't find a job. BUT I had to take out a stafford educational loan and hopefully i'll pay it back as soon as possbile after graduation.

I want to go to grad school, but gotta pay off my loans for BSN. My payments start in August so I have to sstart working soon! I am excited to start work at Kaiser next week. It is call-in RN job for med-surg/oncology. My orientation is about 6-8 weeks! Cant wait to start working as a RN!

OMG! It's the nurses that are taking these low paying jobs that are ruining it for everyone. If you want to make such low pay, be a CNA or something. The market is going through some changes, people are getting scared and accepting the rediculously low paying RN jobs. You are only hurting yourselves and everyone else in the field. I am a traveler and have never been so offended by the offers I am getting from companies. Last year, I was making $60hr and had my choice of assignments. Now, people are bidding on jobs which lowers overall pay. Get paid what you are worth and accept nothing less. If ypu have to ask someone else if they think the pay is enough... It's NOT.

"Get paid what you are worth and accept nothing less."

Easy to say when you were making $60/hr last year, and they were making $8/hr and now have loans to pay off... =)

Who is making $8? I know techs that make $20. My first nursing job was $14.85 hr. We all have to start somewhere. My gripe is when nurses take these travel jobs paying less than full time positions. There are thousands of full time positions available. Take 'em...great. I travel to make money and see the country. It's getting to the point, It would be cheaper for me to go home. For some reason, nurses hurt themselves as a group. I have been offered many jobs for stuipdly low pay, I refuse. We are all professionals, but no one will treat us as such until we treat ourselves as such.
