KCC ADN Acceptance Inquiries

For those that were accepted into KCC's ADN program, how much did your work experience and/or CNA certification play a factor in your application & acceptance? I've heard from some students that it doesn't matter if you have high scores such as a 3.8 pGPA/cGPA (with all co-reqs finished) and above 125 NLN scores...you'll eventually gain acceptance as a top candidate. I'm wondering how much it will help for those that don't have those high scores, for example a 3.4 pGPA/cGPA (only KCC cGPA, since that is the only thing that is counted) and 118 NLN composite. I'm not afraid to apply, I'm just trying to figure out my chances :). Regarding the pre-reqs/co-reqs, I know that I can't increase my chances because I am retaking 2 of the co-requisites b/c of the 5 year time limit. Oh and I got A's in those classes before so I won't be able to increase the pre-req/co-req gpa...it could only decrease and I'm making sure that this won't happen.

So yeah, if anyone knows about the weight that work experience and/or CNA certification have in gaining acceptance, then please speak up. It will be great help to me and many of the other pre-nursing students out there that have NOT SO competitive scores. Thank you in advance :D

I applied with three classes unfinished and a letter of recommendation, and I am on the waiting list right now. May be I m not the perfect person to talk about this since I am not even accepted, but after I talked to the counselor few times, I felt if it wasnt for my work experience, I wouldnt even make to the waiting list, even though my gardes are close to perfect and nln is decent. So yes, experience does bump to up for a little bit! But unfortunately i have to say, the most important is probably still your GPA, NLN and completion of all the corequisites and prerequisite.

I know there are a few in my class who don't have any health care experience..not sure what their scores looked like though.

How did your GPA look like? How many months of work experience did you have? I work at the hospital but only for ~9 months and counting. It's direct patient care so I think it will still help out my stats. I got a decent NLN score of 121 and my GPA is ~3.3, but I'm missing 2 co-requisites because of the 5 year time limit for pharm and microbio...boo. I really hope the pool for fall 2012 is not too competitive.

I don't think the length of the employment matters that much. At the time I applied, I think I probably have about 8 month, which is shorter than yours. I applied with one B for my prereq, the rest are As for all the prereq and coreq completed, NLN at 139, and three coreq class missing.

I talked to two counselors at KCC about my chance of getting in this time, and they didn't seem to be positive about it. They told me usually people apply with only 1 or two coreq missing at the most, having three incompleted is a little too much. However the work note will help me with few more points, so they encouraged me to try apply anyhow, which i did and was placed on the waiting list. I suggest you apply for UHM at the same time as a backup. Seems like UHM is much easier to get in, just talking from my own experience.

I am freaking out right now because I just saw that one of the minimum requirements for acceptance into the KCC programs is a 2.0 @ KCC! I thought I could apply during the next application period because I'm finishing up the last pre/co reqs this semester. None of my classes were at KCC.

Does anyone know if they stick to this? What if I try and take a class in Spring 2012 and still apply for the Fall 2012? Do you think they would consider me? :crying2:

ummm...news to me...I didn't take any classes at KCC and never heard of that requirment...

Thanks so much for this info :D:D I am going to apply for UHM as well, but I would like to get into KCC because of their awesome reputation for clinical/hands on experience. I really hope they take you off the alternate list and into the acceptance list. You seem like you have great stats and a solid foundation to be a nurse.

Whew! Okay, because I printed some papers off a link (from another recent post on here) - the admissions application/checklist form, and there it is under "Explanation for acceptance - minimum requirements for acceptance." It says, "Students with a GPR of less than 2.0 at KCC cannot apply for any of the nursing programs until they have a cumulative GPR of 2.0 or higher at KCC."

I'm so relieved to know that you applied without taking classes there and are on the waiting list. Thanks :yeah:

Thanks :) I decided to go UHM in the end, so tired of waiting. You know how it is...Out of curiosity, i still went to the orientation at kcc today, 40 plus people there, probably only 30 something are accepted out of 200 people who applied. Also sounds like about half of the people there have some sort of health care experience. Hope you find the infor useful...Anyway, dont give up! Keep on trying! You will get there! Good luck!

There are a couple girls in my class who had one more coreq to complete when they got accepted. Everyone else was done. Just some info :)

Oooh that's good to hear. I wonder what their gpa's and nln scores were.
