Kaiser in trouble?

U.S.A. Hawaii

Published

so at our dept meeting the other week our supervisors started talking about how Kaiser Hawaii is currently running at a loss. they said Kaiser National gave Hawaii a 3 year period to turn things around before they shut down Kaiser Hawaii. Apparantly this 3 year term started at the beginning of 2006. so we have 18months left. is this a big secret we're not supposed to talk about b/c this was the first I heard about it..

supposedly the other previous kaiser regions that were put on this 3 year probation status all ended up failing and were shut down completely. damn this is gonna suck.

I also work for kaiser, I have not heard anything specific about your region, as you know the company has said since membership is down, they are financially strapped right now...... If Obama gets elected I see Kaiser with much more opportunities to provide care.

wow with HMC already laying off 150 workers and possibly kaiser going downhill?? man new grad market is ultra tough as it is right now!!

In some areas, the seasoned nurse market is tough!

There is no nursing shortage in Hawaii except in certain specialized areas and those areas are seeking experienced nurses. I know several very experienced nurses who have not been able to secure FT employment. They are doing agency work and taking on-call positions in the hopes that their efforts will lead to FT employment. There are new grad programs here but not enough to absorb the numbers of new grads that are being turned out by the nursing programs.

I really don't know why people think that there is an infinite number of nursing positions available in the Hawaii nursing market. Hospitals are tightening their belts, some are outright cutting positions. Common sense would dictate that every single graduate of every single nursing program is not going to get a job in Hawaii.

Sad but true.
