Hawaii RN new to Kailua Kona area and internet networking

Aloha, my name is Tracey. I have been a nurse for 18 years and recently decided I wanted to work in paradice (to have the "working" retirement everyone dreams of). I ran into difficulties getting a job while still on the main land so I moved over before my family to obtain employment. Does any one have any resources, contacts or leads that you are willing to forward to me? Thank you!

I visited your beautiful island for the first time earlier this year. What a perfect place to live, work, retire!! We absolutely loved it there.

I agree that the island of Hawaii is a beautiful place to visit, as are all the Hawaiian islands. However, there is an enormous difference between visiting and "living, working, and retiring" there. I lived in Hawaii for the past eight years, and recently moved back to "the Mainland."

At the time I moved to Hawaii, there was a nursing shortage, and I was able to find a job easily--that is no longer the case, as the market has become much more competitive. There is definitely a preference for hiring "local" people in most facilities, as well as immigrants from certain countries.

I chose to leave Hawaii for a number of reasons.

It's expensive.

It's in an inconvenient location for keeping an eye on my elderly parents.

I don't like being treated as a second-class citizen based on my race. (One positive outcome of living in Hawaii is that I have developed a whole new perspective and understanding of racism that most people in my demographic would never experience otherwise.)

And healthcare in Hawaii is far behind the continental US in terms of quality, in my opinion as a nurse. I would never encourage people to retire there, no matter how appealing the idea might sound.

I don't regret the time I spent living in Hawaii because it was a rich learning experience. I have met, worked with, and cared for people from all over the world--the Philippines, Japan, China, Korea, Micronesia, Tonga, Samoa--the list goes on and on. I also don't regret moving back to the Mainland. Yet. I'm sure in the midst of winter I'll be missing those white sand beaches!

Thank you all for your insight. I have already looked at the Hawaii forum and found most of the information refered to other islands. I will continue to plug along. I am determined to make it here!

:) Check out the government jobs also --- veterans admisnistration for example.....they have all sorts of outpatient care or something . G ot USA.gov jobs and put in the island or islands that you are in. I am sure you will like your decision . Everybody is different ...just follow your dreams and find out for yourself if yuo like it or not, but find it out for yourself. Lots of blessings to you !!!! :nurse:

Aloha Tracey! I have 20 years in as a nurse and have worked the past 5 years as a travel nurse. I was lucky enough to have 2 awesome assignments in MAUI and The Big Island. I had vacationed in the islands 10 times before my travel assignment. You might look at agencies or SNF's. I worked at Hale Makua in Wailuku Maui and Hilo Medical Center in Hilo,Hawaii. Good luck

How's it going since then? I am just starting my RN clinicals, but the goal is to end up on the Big Island....Any insight would be appreciated!
