Going around Oahu

U.S.A. Hawaii

Published

Hi!

I'll be moving from Canada to Oahu, Hawaii shortly, and I don't know if I need to bring my car with me. Is the bus system ok enough or is it better to go around the island with my own car?

Thanks,

Jennifer

Aloha,

I just moved here a little over a month ago and bought a cheap car for $2000. I figured, it would cost me that much to ship my car from California and back eventually, if I decided to. I figured that if I moved again, I could always resell the car and re-coup some of my money.

As for "The Bus" system, although I've never taken it, I hear it's pretty good. But, you have to realize that the bus will make frequent and many stops. So, if you add that factor to the already heavy traffic factor, it may take you quite a while to get anywhere.

Hope that helps and good luck.

I'm from the north shore of oahu and have ridden the bus a handful of times and have found the bus system pretty reliable. But you do have to realize that it does make a lot of stops and depending on what your route and shift are, you may be battling with the students or others who work the same hours as you may. I think you need to weigh out the costs...how much it is to get your car shipped...gas prices...mileage of your daily commute...price of parking...bus pass prices...hope this helps. good luck!

I would leave it behind. It will probably cost you close to $1500 to ship it to Hawaii.

There are plenty of cars here. You can even rent a car for almost the same as a month's car payment on Priceline.

If you live within 5 miles of downtown Honolulu, the bus will get you where you need to go almost as fast as a car. See:

Email me if you need help finding a car when you arrive. I like to shop for cars like some people like to shop for shoes.

Thank you all so much for your answers! I am now thinking about leaving my car behind! It is not easy to take such a huge decision when you never ever saw the place where you're going to live, but you gave me great advice!

I might meet you somewhere on Oahu!

It totally depends on where you'll be living and working. The Bus does not run 24/7, BTW.

Before we moved we sold our cars and bought almost-new used cars once we got here. The used car market is huge and we got good deals. If you're coming from the west coast of the continent, though, you might do better shipping your car here.

Do you know where you'll be living and working yet?

And (just curious) what happened with Minnesota? Weren't you planning on moving there?

I don't know yet where I'll be working... I know I would get more precise advice if I knew, but I'm currently working with different nursing agencies to find the best assignment for me. I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on the East coast, so I would have to bring my car from one side to the other of the USA... This is why I wanted to know if I could live without it!

Please be careful...the nursing job situation here is terrible right now. There are cutbacks everywhere---one of the bigger hospital corporations just cut the total of beds in its facilities from over 300 to 100. I have seen travel nurses have assignments canceled and they've had to go back home.

Given the present market and the fact that this would be a travel/agency assignment I would definitely not ship a car here from the East coast of the continent.

WindwardOahuRN is right. It is a very though market at the moment for Nurses, and for almost everybody else, too, as there were lots of layoffs recently. The economy is bad, and might get worse.

Lots of local Nurses are looking for jobs too.

For you to move over here at this time, might be a bit risky. The hositals are cancelling agency nurses first, before they cut their own staff. So, if they cancel your assignment, you'll have a hard time getting another one.

By the way, do you have a TN Visa, or are you a US Citizen?

If you are a TN Visa holder, you are only allowed to work for the employer listed on your visa! Just another issue to keep in mind...

Good luck.

Can you tell me, are you going to Hawaii as a Travel Nurse and, if so which agency. I have been trying for several weeks.

Thanks,

I'll be working for a nursing agency on a TN Visa. I bet the nurses market is rough right now, but if I don't try, I won't ever know if it would have worked!! Thanks for the advice on the TN visa, I know I need to stick to my employer once I get it. I don't have a particular agency at this point, I've been in contact with American Mobile, Americanahs, MedStaff and Travel Nurse solutions.
