Any military nurses/spouses on here?

U.S.A. Hawaii

Published

I'm moving to Oahu for the 1st time on May 1st with my husband who will be stationed at Camp Smith. My mother grew up in Hawaii but I have never been. I'm hoping to connect with other nurses/spouses who might be able to tell me a little about their job hunting experience and more. :) I hope to hear from you.

i am freaking out about this as well. i graduate from purdue in may and am moving to oahu right after. i will be taking the nclex in hawaii and will have no experiance. i will really really need to get a job at that point! four years of school and not much money coming in! any advice from anyone on the easiest way to get my foot in the door.

also can you start working before you take the nclex anywhere and what would i be doing. i know at home you can become a glorified tech and do everything but pass the actual medication.

freaking out!

Hi there, or aloha

I'm hoping all went well for you moving to Oahu and job hunting etc.

I am married to a LVN (Army) who is currently stationed in Tripler and am looking to move there soon myself.

Have heard that Oahu is experiencing a Nurse shortage so I expect you shouldn't have any difficulties. I am currently going through the transfer of my credentials from Australia to the US so I am going through a much longer process than yourself. Have more info about Oahu re nursing if you would like.

cheers

just wanted to update this post. How is everyone doing that moved there a year ago? Any advice for a new military spouse moving there?

Aloha !! I am due to separate from AD in late Sept. I have put my reume out and already had several positive responses. I have not had a bad expereince yet. As mentioned by Sassy, the commute & parking are things you definitley have to consider. I have worked in the medical field for over 13 years and graduated from A Fl LPN program. I never took the NCLEX in FL. as I PCS'd and then ended up deployed ALOT. So I will be taking here in HAwaii for the first time. I am also enrolled in Excelsior for the assoc. RN program. Any suggestions from the Hawaii nurses would be appreciated.:twocents: Mahalo

Hello everyone! I'm a military spouse just entering nursing school, my husband literally JUST got stationed at Fort Myer VA with a 3 year minimal commitment to the Old Guard, my program is 18 months so I'm set to go in that department, what has been everyone's experience with PCSing, job hunting from state to state? Do you have to take the board test in every new state you move to? I've been trying to find that information via the web but have not been able to find a straight forward answer, any advice?

Hey Ladies, I just moved here 6 weeks ago and I'm also a new grad. My husband is at Pearl Harbor. I was just hired at Hawaii Medical Center East in a new grad program. I was reading some of the other replies and someone said to avoid this hosptial...What's the reason???

yes primary care nursing with no aide, and there was the possibility of MORE lay off and bankruptcy. they have hired a lot of new grads

Welcome! Marine wife? So am I. My husband station at MCBH. I am a local girl from Hawaii who married military. I went to nursing school here and graduated December 2008. I passed my NCLEX March 2009 and I have been RN job hunting furiously! I am currently working as a call-in Ward Clerk at Straub Hospital which is part of a big organization in Hawaii called Hawaii Pacific Health. I am starting orientation as a call-in RN for Kaiser Permanenete this week.

As far as the job outlook here it has been tough for new-grads. Some arre lucky to find jobs, other are still searching applying as a nurse aide or clerk to get their foot in the door. New Grad programs are limited here. Most hospitals are direct hire and prefer experience. LTC is the same way. Please see my New-Grad RN Update on where you can find jobs on Oahu, HI: https://allnurses.com/hawaii-nurses/update-new-grad-401026.html

Tripler Army Medical Center is the military hospital in Hawaii. They actually do have a new-grad program. This is called "Developmental Position". I am not quite sure of it posted on usajobs.gov website. You can call the hospital to inquire. The application and hiring process is very long! This position does not allow us to use the military spouse preference.

If you have questions feel free to ask me and I can help!

Are you PSCing to Hawaii?

I would suggest to finish nursing school where you at. It would be hard to transfer credits to go into another nursing school. When you are done with school, take your NCLEX board exam in the same state of your nursing school. When you do PCS it would be easy to just get your license endorse. This means you wont thave to take your NCLEX again. You could be paying for more then one license depending on the state you go to. Please check with the states BON for details.

If you get hired with a military hospital, the need to have a particular state license is not necessary. They acknowledge just one ACTIVE license. Again check with the military hospital.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Hello there. Welcome to Hawaii. I think you after you get your Hawaii RN license you should not have a problem finding a job because you are an experienced nurse. It is hard to find jobs for new grad RN here. Because your husband is station in Hickam it may be ideal for you to get a job at the Tripler Army Medical Center. Only thing is long application and hiring process. I submitted my resume via USAjobs.gov in March 2009. Interviewed in May 2009. Accepted the job in June 2009. I am still waiting for the paperwork to process. I have no started date yet.

Other places in your area to work in the hospital as a RN would be Kaiser Permanente Medical center Moanalua. I work there as a call in RN. Further out on the west side of the island is Kapiolani Medical Center Pali Momi in Aiea, HI, and Hawaii Medical Center East in Ewa Beach, HI. Further out to the east side of the island in Honolulu, HI are Queen's Medical Center, Kuakini Medical Center, Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.

I hope this help. If you have questions feel free to contact me.
