Oh my. If you think Florida is a tourist-based economy you really ought to take a look at Hawaii.
I thank my lucky stars each and every day that neither my income nor my husband's income is dependent upon the tourist economy in Hawaii. I thank God for our Union, seniority, and contracts. I thank whoever for the fact that I work in a facility that is hugely solvent and that I left a facility that was NOT at just the right time. I thank God that my husband accrued his pension benefits on the mainland before we moved here. I am truly blessed.
We are, here in Hawaii, classically (and proven over time), at LEAST five years behind the mainland in just about everything. The impact of an economic recovery will take much much longer to show the effects here.
If, as an individual RN, you can snag a position that will provide adequate income, go for it. But if you think you can just pack up, move here, and have your income guaranteed because you are an RN? Those days are long gone. Have that position secured BEFORE you move here or you might be in for a heap of heartache.
Caveat emptor.
