Re: Jobs in Hawaii
ATTENTION ANY NEW GRADS WHO WANT TO MOVE TO THE ISLANDS: Hawai'i is in a class by itself.
Year after year after year... there are thousands of nurses on the mainland who have always wanted to live in Hawai'i. They vacation here and love it. So, they want to move here. When a nurse with 5 years experience in her speciality applies to a hospital, the hospital is gonna scoop her up. She requires almost NO TRAINING, so the hospital is gonna hire her quickly.
A HOSPITAL IS IN BUSINESS TO MAKE $$$. Let me say this again. HOSPITALS EXIST TO TURN A PROFIT. They don't want to spend $$$ to train. If they wait long enough, they WILL get applications from experienced mainland nurses. And they WILL hire them.
Registry is the same. Experienced nurses try to get jobs with registries because they will be paid more than a "regular" position at the hospital. Traveling nurses, same thing.
Have you noticed that experienced nurses aren't posting lots of messages on allnurses.com because they are too busy working? It's mainly students and new grads and mainlanders that post here.
For the year 2009... the economy is horrible. It's hit Hawai'i just as hard as the rest of the U.S. Today, hospitals want to spend even less $$$ training new grads. Yes, there are jobs for new grads. There are 2 jobs for every 50 new graduates.
If you are thinking about moving here, you might want to:
(1) Read other parts of allnurses.com message boards in Hawai'i and you'll see that locals have to move to the mainland to get experience.
(2) If you really wanna shock, read allnurses.com message boards IN OTHER STATES. Read posts about new grads. You'll find the same story in other states... hospitals do not want to spend $$$ to train.
(3) Consider this... Yes, I paint a bleak picture. I would rather you know the truth BEFORE you move here, so you can make an informed decision.
