Like Lisa said...we're all in the same boat. I too was considering taking an LPN job..even a CNA!! But I don't think they'd allow it! I've actually seen postings for Kaiser in Oahu and Maui hiring for LPNs but not RNs..bottom line if they can afford not to hire an RN right now then they won't. Strange cuz either they're hiring for RN supervisors or LVNs..but not just RNs Also funny how, they post that they're hiring but then you won't get a call back..for YEARS I've seen these postings and thought 'oh...they must be at a shortage and I'll find a job EZ..yah right'

I mean I'll take what I can get right now, but it seems like new employees and new grads get scum work..and get floated around the entire hospital..nothing steady.

I feel your pain! The islands are saturated with nurses and everyone is fighting for the same positions. Its tough, as i am recently now unemployed RN from the State system and basically worked almost all facilities in my 16 yrs here on kauai. Now what? I am thinking seriously about changing gears and possibly profession. Sometimes I just want to work as a bartender or something, just for a change of pace and scene.....

Try Nursefinders! They have 2 offices: one (in Waikiki) that does staffing for facilities (hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, etc.) and the other (on Piikoi St.), which does home care (private duty shifts, in/out visits, transports, schools, etc.). The pay isn't that great but great people to work for. I'm sure they could keep you busy. Good way to get your foot in the door at places. Good luck!

I think sooo much of it is knowing people and networking like crazy.

I'm an RN and did a few shifts at LPN level at one of the nursing homes in Oahu..thru my agency. But right now the work is so dry..and I won't go back to the nursing home I was sent to unless my agency puts me on evening shift.

ps I know 5 different nurses at one of the hospices and STILL am waiting to hear back from the director..

If you're still waiting to hear back, that's a big red flag. Just goes to show you how disorganized and unprofessional they are. Preview of how they'll treat you if you actually sign on. Trust me....don't do it!

I still haven't heard back from any of the hospices. But I hardly ever hear back from our agency's recruiter anymore either. All the hours 'we' were promised...?? I can't recommend that agency either.
