Any thoughts on Kahi Mohala?

Just wondering if anyone works at or has heard anything about Kahi Mohala? I've applied for their adult program, although it looks like their child/adolescent program is their main focus. Is this a good facility to work at? I've heard mixed things about the neighborhoods around there, is Ewa Beach a decent place to live, or how bad would the morning commute be if we lived closer to Honolulu proper (we'd been looking at Makiki)?

Hmmm...never heard of Kahi Mohala. I had to Google it to find out what it even is! And still, it doesn't ring a bell.
As far as Ewa is concerned, I guess it depends on your definition of "decent place to live." It is a lower income, primarily Filipino/Micronesian neighborhood--only one congested road in and out of the area, so you would need to take that into consideration. It has a higher crime rate than some other more desirable areas.
Sorry I can't be more specific but I don't live or work in that area.

Been to Kahi once dragging my 9th grader there for suicidal ideation and threat years ago. Never tried working there, but was interviewed and hired for Kaneohe State Mental Hospital in Kaneohe, HI. That place was creepy in a beautiful setting, or neighborhood. I toured the facility but ended up get an last minute offer on Kauai so I took that. Good luck!

I lived in Makaki and applied at Kahi at the same time. Interviewed twice even. Nice grounds, patients looked okay.. nothing looked too shady and i've worked in similar psych places too.

Of course... they didn't hire me... so that's kinda shady. =P~

1) Makiki to Ewa Beach. Long drive, but opposite traffic and its right by the offramp. So the drive should take less than 30 minutes. Though... if you work out there. Why not just live out there. Closer and Cheaper. You don't have to live exactly in that area... maybe check out Mililani? There are plenty of nice places to live.

2) They work 8 hour shifts last I checked. And the pay is considerably less... maybe even 15 dollars less an hour.

A job is a job though. Take whatever you can get. =)

Thanks for the replies! I haven't even had an interview offer yet, so who knows, but I'm doing my best to think outside the box to get myself to Hawaii. (I know, I've read all the posts about how hard it is, but if I don't at least try then for sure it will never happen. And in my experience the universe generally responds to my optimism, I just have to stay patient and alert for opportunity.) $15 less an hour worries me slobgob, but I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there. I did just find an article about how they lost a gov't contract and fired like 30 staff over the summer, which perhaps doesn't bode well for me at the moment. But I'm gonna keep looking around! (Does anyone else hate the new job search feature at Queens? What is that about?)

i applied for kahi back in 2006 for a LPN position. went for an interview and got the job but choose not to work there due to the fact that it was quite common for patients to attack the nurses. i didnt like that part. i did work there through an agency once. i worked in the adult unit and i have to say the nurses didnt do much, the psych aides did a lot more. most of the nurses sat at the nurses "desk" or "station" the whole time. i prefer to be out and about with the patients. good luck to you.

Someone else said the drive from Makiki to Ewa is half an hour, but I disagree. It might be a half hour at 1 in the morning, but most of the time it takes up to an hour or longer. Especially right now, with the roadwork on Fort Weaver Road. Good luck with your job hunt!

Petunia,

I told him 30 minutes. And I'm pretty sure that's accurate. Remember:

1) If the shift starts at 7am... you leave the house at 6am. Very little traffic going Ewa bound.
2) He's not going to Ewa Beach... Kahi is approximately 1 minute drive from the off-ramp. Fort Weaver is a nightmare... good thing he doesn't drive down it. =)

I believe Kahi is part of the Sutter Health system which is also in California..if memory serves.

I've applied there but ended up taking another job. Seems not too long ago I had heard some facilities were being shut down but again that depends on what day you ask me and what I remember hearing on the news

Sorry I cannot help with info about the facility. I used to live in Ewa beach, the rent is more affordable and White Sands is a great place to surf.

Thanks for the heads up about the cut in pay, I wouldn't be able to afford it
