El Paso is in a unique geographical area, there's not other major cities around us to draw from. Starting hospital pay for brand new right out of school nurses is $23-24/hour. The hospitals are also offering signing bonuses that are $4-5K. Something to consider.

i actually just filled out an application for a hospital in el paso...i've been thinking texas for a little while now, for a change of pace. where do you work? i'm very interested in getting a job there, so i'm hoping for a bit of good news.

It's not having a job that doesn't bother me...what bothers me is when the family says:

1. "But I thought they're hiring nurses" (and I have to explain that they are if they have experience, and even then it's a tough market)

2. "But they're hiring nurses up here" (and I have to remind them that I'm not up there, nor is relocating a possibility given my better half's career...and even then, they want experience, given they live in one of the most oversaturated nursing markets)

3. And my favorite one, which is: "You'll have no problem getting a job" (thanks for the pep talk, but if that were really true, I'd have one by now).

It would not be so bad if we didn't have the same conversation EVERY WEEK.

Oh well. What can you do but keep plugging away? My time will come...eventually

I know what you mean. I graduated in May, and have been applying for jobs since February. I've gone on 4 interviews and have not been job offered. I have one year of Nurse Intern experience and was not hired by the hospital I used to work for because they are not hiring new grads due to preceptor issues.

I left a very stable job making good money to attend nursing school fulltime. I am at risk of losing my house. My savings ran out mid-May and I thought I would have a job lined up to continue on with my living expenses. I've put in over 100 applications since February and get rejection emails daily. I've gone dressed up to the hopsitals and hand delivered my resume. No one is hiring new grads. Not even the hospital that is associated with the nursing school I attended. According to the nurse recuriter they will be hiring new grads by the end of July.

I have a job now at an insurance company. I figure I will do this until nursing open up a little bit, hopefully, by the end of the year. For now, I've quit looking. I'm just so tired of being turned down, or told you need one year experience, etc. I've even tried the community blood bank, diaylsis, and nursing homes. I hear the same thing, "you need experience". The nursing homes are willing to hire new grads LPN's and not new grad RN's.

I'm thankful I got some type of job in this economy. It's not what I want, but it will help me keep my home.

Please remember to not only look at hospitals. check into public health, doctors offices, companies that need occupational nurses (usually plants/factories). Now this next one I could never do because i'm chicken but check into the prison's to see if they need nurses and also for those of you who are single, the military...again, I'm too chicken for that one too. There is hospice and home health nursing and travel jobs (tho traveling usually wants a year or more experience). If you have start in an area you don't like at least its experience until hospitals do start hiring. Oh, and insurance companies hire nurses to do physical exams and travel to people's homes to take blood samples. Just broaden your horizons and when you call back and speak to human resources or a nurse recruiter, let them know that you are willing to work anywhere, and any shift to make yourself more marketable. Just don't give up! My best to you all!

As far as the prison thing, good luck. I was so excited to get an interview (any interview) at a Nevada prison and after a few minutes the guy says "oh, you're a new grad, sorry I didn't realize. Why don't you come back after you get some experience. We can't hire new grads rght now." Umm excuse me, were you just to lazy to read my application. I mean there was a little box to check about number of years experience and I ckecked the 0. Really didn't appreciate the 4 hour drive for a woops. Anyways it is all just so stressful. I just want a job already, it seems pathetic that even the nursing homes and clinics are turning away new grads. and i am looking into relocating but thats a big process too. sorry for the diatribe, its been a tough few months

Ok I will vent because seriously I'm getting MEGA discourage and even starting to loose the energy to wake up in the morning and apply for another jobs...it is now the end of June and more than a month from the date I graduated (May 16,2009).I applied to 3 hospitals and got the polite thank you but you dont have the necessary experience on the other hand I got a list of hospitals where they suppose to give chances to a new graduate nurses but I developed a fear of rejection you know....anyway my family is furious (they said I dont try hard enough) my loans soon will kick in (November),I'm broke (on the verge of bancruptcy) Have a shiety job (retail part time) and I'm preparing for the NCLEX and I'm force to look for a full time job that is not nursing related because I cant keep up with my bills, trully sad.

I am in school currently and live in WA state so have not had to do the job search quite yet, so my only suggestion is check out usajobs.gov They post jobs available on military bases, veteran affairs & federal prisons. Type in Registered Nurse and you can see what's available throughout the US (or type in specific state). I know that this is an avenue most people don't think about. (Im military reserves so always have it in the back of my mind). Good luck!!

I'm sorry that so many of you are having trouble finding jobs, just remember how hard you worked and something will come up soon. Try taking a look at my post for some tips on how to help find a job as a new grad: http://allnurses.com/graduate-nurse-...ho-403767.html
