Walk-in is really hard. I walked in some, then stopped. Spent a lot of time on the road just to find out they are not hiring, it just waste a lot of time and gas money! Maybe it is better to call to find out if they are hiring first.

Most places over the phone won't tell you if they are hiring. I'm lucky in LA that I can hit 5-6 nursing homes with a few miles.

You'll get it. Just followup.

I have a cd of upbeat songs I keep in my car cd player so I am always happy and smiley when I walk in the door.

My career services liason basically told me walkins was the way to get jobs

Ok I nailed it. He hires new grads all the time and I followed someone's advice to talk about my clinical experiences as if I worked there. He wanted to know if I understood the difference between LTC and acute so I got a great opportunity there. I closed off the interview asking him if he had any reservations about hiring me and he didn't. I then emphasized that I really wanted to work for him and what the hiring timeline would be. I should know in a week or so.

If I don't get it it wasn't because of anything I did wrong.

That's great. You both inspire me to drop by some places next week. I picked up some LTC applications recently and I haven't returned them yet. Meanwhile, here's what I did instead...okay, a waste of time, but it was fun.

New Grad Lyrics to John Mayer's new single "Who Says"....

Who Says I can’t be a nurse

Give the shots and not rehearse

Who says I can’t measure up?

Went to school for long enough

Got the scrubs and I’m good to go

Just need a chance to let it show…

Who says I can’t do that?

Who Says I can’t give meds,

Change the sheets while you’re in the bed,

Who says I can’t call the doc,

Tell him the patient went into shock,

Push the pressors and get ‘em back,

Who says I can’t do that?

It’s been a long week of “no new grads,”

It’s been a long week of “don’t call us,”

I can’t remember me looking any harder,

But then again I don’t remember much.

Go in there all spruced up. Be sweet to the receptionist. She will be the one who will either call someone to talk to you or hand your application to the right person or just file it away.

I have only applied in person to 8 places so far and got one interview. Thats a better return on your investment than the 100's of online apps and much hand wringing.

I might take a little break tomorrow. Lie in, refresh my spirit and then work on my plan of attack for my next walk ins.

I just got my LPN license on Oct 16 and have started looking for jobs. Its frustrating that most employers want at least a year experience. I also have to add that a few of the hospitals in my area don't hire LPNs. I also noticed that many of the LTFs require ACLS.

To make myself more marketable I signed up for an IV certification course and for ACLS. I'll have them both completed by Nov 14.

Then I'm going to really start hunting for a job. Hopefully I can find something in skilled nursing.

I've applied to start an LPN-RN transition program in May.

Its a tight job market even for new RNs. The hospital where I did my clinicals isn't currently hiring new RNs, they've got enough inhouse people transitioning that they don't need to hire out. I hope that changes by the time I complete RN.

I have the IV certification. Not sure if it makes a difference though. PM and I'll send you a link to a free stroke certification you can do through the AHA
