VA Nurse Pay

  1. 0
I went to work for the VA in 1989 after getting my Masters in Nursing. I was in charge of Nursing Education for the nurses at that hospital. I had to retire on medical disability in 1992. At that time my pay grade was IN-06. The pay scales and the names of the pay grades have changed, and I don't know what that would be equal to. I need to find out what the pay for that position would be now. I have been able to work part time, but if I earn too much, I lose the disability pension. The pension is barely enough to pay for my medical insurance, but I can't risk losing the insurance. The VA told me that it wasn't in their best interests to give me that information. I am unable to work full time, but I've had to turn down a pay raise because I was afraid I would earn too much. I would appreciate any help anyone can give. I have looked at the pay scales for VA nurses, but I don't know which one would be equal to IN-06.

A master degree nurse in the VA system is a Nurse 3. Can not give you much more info then that since each VA has its own payscale.

In my area, a masters degree does not give you a Nurse 3, many have masters and are only nurse 2's. Jeck is correct, you need to find out what the payscale is in your area, sorry

look on there, choose your location to adjust for locality pay, and just try to match it up with what you were making, it wont be 100% accurate because different series have slightly different scales

Problem with this website is that it does not cover Title 38 payscales which VA nurse's are paid under. Title 38 payscales are very hard to find on the web.

I've been looking for VA nurses payscales in title 38 and so far can't find a thing - has anyone been able to find it on the web? I'm usually a good at finding stuff and I can't find it anywhere....

You won't be able to find them. If I want to know my payscale(I'm an LVN at the VA) I have to physically go to HR and ask for my series specific payscale. What you see on the internet is generalized. I had thought a Grade 4 Step 2 was the same across the board, but an LVN may be at 40k/yr while an NA at 4/2 will be 36k/year.

Ok, thanks. I'll stop looking - it doesn't look like I'll be able to find it. I'll save my time studying for the OCN exam which I like to think will possibly make me more marketable and help with getting a better salary. I hate to ask the recruiter - I don't want to look like that's all I'm interested in.

    Thanks!

If you are working at the VA there is a intranet site you can go to to find out all the title 38 payscales in the country. You need to know the station number of the facility you are looking for. Sorry, but I do not remember the name of the intranet site.
