VA Hiring Process

From the previous posts I've read the VA hiring process is pretty long and drawn out. I've applied to two different VA sites. The VA an hour away from my home I can always get in contact with a nurse recruiter and my application status for two posting says "referred to selecting official." The VA closest to my home, I can't get through to the recruiter, she emailed me back once and the status of all the apps just says "application received." I do know a nurse practitioner that works at this VA site and she tried to give my resume to the recruiter, but I had to apply online.

For those of you that are familiar with the hiring process, any idea what the next step is. In all there are around 20 RN vacancies. The two systems have two completely different online application submissions, how will I know if I've completed the application process correctly, its a little confusing :(

I've been applying since I've graduated and earlier this year I found out that I was applying the wrong way so those positions don't count. These positions closed in September.

Thanks in advance ?

Thank you. I've read this website for awhile now but hadn't posted until tonight. Does anyone know how to find the post you made afterwards so you can see if there are any responses? Sorry if this is silly but I've looked everywhere.

Don't worry, I wondered this too at first. If you go to your profile you can tap the button that says "Show all threads you have started" or "Show all your posts" and that should help.

It's easy to find using the allnurses dot com app, once you know where to look, but I'm not sure how obvious it is on the full website. :)

Thank you, got it now.

So how did you get hired as a new grad? What area are you in? Is it a special program for new grads? If so, how did ypu find out about it?

I was hired as part of the RN residency/Transition to Practice program. It gets listed on usajobs like all the rest of the VA jobs. I have absolutely no idea what area I will be in but I'm assuming med/surg. I have 3 days of VA orientation starting on Monday followed by 3 more days of RN orientation. I'm assuming I'll get the remaining juicy details once I met up with the nursing educator next week.

Can someone give me info on the Nurses Board? I received a tentative offer until the Board meets to decide what salary to offer me. Does that take long?

Usually you will hear something after your Vetpro is verified.

Thanks! My Vetpro was quick bc I currently work for the Department of the Army. Just waiting on my credentialing to be complete.

The do offer something called the VANEEP. I'm getting my BSN with the VA paying for it all AND my salary (as a GS-5 since I started in the pharmacy). You have to be a full time employee for a year and they will pay up to 2 years for 3 years obligation of service.

The hiring process at the VA is long and grueling. It took about 3 months for me to get officially hired. I kept in touch with the nurse manager and nurse recruiter. I probably talked to the nurse manager every other week. Best of luck!

Do you know what the hold up was?

It's like that in every department. I got hired in the pharmacy (interviewed in Jan. 2010 and start date was 4/12/10) and now I'm at IUPUI getting my BSN that they are happy to pay for...great thing about the VA is that you can transfer to any VAMC in the world and not have to retake the NCLEX :-)

I am so happy to participate in this thread. Any support is well worth it. I applied for an outpatient RN position last month. My status states eligible, referred to selecting officials. I spoke with the HR staff last week and was informed that well over 100 applicants applied. I am very passionate about this position, but not sure what to think? I haven't received any other updates at this time. I check the website regularly and I am constantly thinking and praying for an interview. In the meantime, I can rely on this blog to hear some positive insight. Congrats and Good Luck to everyone who has made progress in the hiring process!

Has anyone heard about the VA hiring freeze?
