USAF Flight nurse questions

I am seriously considering trying to get into the USAF as a flight nurse. Not sure how difficult it is. I am 33 years old and plan to join when I am 35. I am in great shape. I have done ER/ICU/Trauma for 11 years and Critical Care transport for 2 years and Plan to fly for 2 more years with Med Center Air ( Rotor and Fixed wing) before joining, for experience. I have BLS,ACLS,PALS,TNCC,CCRN,ATLS AND PLAN TO TAKE THE CFRN. I was wondering if this is enough to get a flight postion in the service. I disheartened with the civilian world of catering to all demanding welfare patients. I have the skills to serve our soldiers who deserve what I can offer them and just wondering about the opportunities.

Specializes in mostly in the basement.

Well, you certainly seem to have a lot of relevant civilian nursing experience under your belt. Impressive resume.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about Active Duty nursing--I am on the reserve side so can't help you much there.

Do look around at some of the flight RN info throughout the forum, there seems to be a fair amount, and hopefully one of the AD folks will be through to offer you some more appropriate guidance.

Best!

Specializes in Anesthesia.

1st of all I don't know that you would be satisified with AF flight nursing. It is basically med-surg in the air. It is a speciality and requires speciality training, but it is not considered critical care. Also, you cannot join the AF on active duty and go straight to flight nursing. You can in the reserves but not AD. With your background you would more than likely be placed in ICU and probably get a slot on a critical care air transport team/CCATT. CCATT though is not a full time job and for the most part you would only be flying during deployments.
