Navy Nurse First Duty/ODS/Relocation 2013

Hello to all Navy NCP students! I am graduating in two months and finally got an email from Bethesda that I can now contact detailer for ODS dates and first duty station. I cannot believe it takes so long to find out where I will be stationed. I was told that I need to only choose from three big Navy hospitals; however, by reading older post, it seems like I still could be sent to other places. Please keep in touch and let me know if any of you get any word from *****. I will too:)

I'm sure we'll do fine in PT because I've seen some of the pictures from ODS on Facebook and not every individual looks completely fit. I know it's not nice to look for stuff like that but it makes me feel a little bit better about myself, lol.

So do you know where you will be stationed after ODS? Right now it's Bethesda, MD for me. :-)

Hi 240zRN & BSN-NavyNurse,

I'm reporting to ODS in May too! I would love to be able to start "meeting" fellow classmates before arriving in RI, but I've always been rather wary of posting on public sites... I was just a lurker on allnurses dot com all the way through nursing school, but created an account to reply to this thread since I had been checking frequently to see if anyone else going to the May class would post anything.

Would you guys be interested in a non-public group (LinkedIn or something) set up for us and our classmates? Who knows, there might be some more lurkers out there reading this :)

Hello called-to-serve,

That would be a great idea! I'm already on linked-in and would enjoy a group dedicated to the May ODS class :-) . There is also a Facebook group dedicated to Navy officer development school (that is what you look up when you're on FB and it should pop up). I'll have to mess with linked-in and see how to create a group, not sure how to do that yet :-) .

I don't have Linkedin, but I have a facebook. If someone were to create a facebook group for the ODS May group so we could connect and share stuff I would totally join.

I know how to make a group on Facebook and will create it in a few weeks. I'm taking a break from Facebook until mid-April. It takes up too much time for me, which is my own fault lol.

Congratulations to everyone! I am currently stationed at WRNMMC Bethesda if anyone has any questions feel free to PM me.

Hey bfrei! I'm new to this so I still don't know how to PM message but ill be reporting to bethesda on may 12th. Also I'll be attending the April ODS class. I contacted the person I believe is in charge of the sponsor program there about a month ago and she said she will submit my name and once I am assigned a sponsor they will contact me. I was hoping to hear from them before I left for ODS. Does the sponsor assignments usually take this long? And how important/what is the role of a sponsor? Thanks!

Hello Sw54g,

In order to PM you have to have 15 posts, and I'm also new to this so I'm trying to increase my responses in order to PM. I think that's a great question and I'd also like to hear about the process of getting a sponsor. Thank you in advance bfrei! :-)

The sponsor process is different everywhere, with every person in charge of it. I did not receive my Portsmouth sponsor information until half way through ODS. It is a good idea and a good program especially when you arrive but do not throw all your eggs in one basket. Be as resourceful as you can.

Sw88tpea,

So the sponsor helps with the task of settling in and getting everything sent (belongings and paperwork) to the first duty station? I haven't been told about my sponsor yet, I will contact my recruiter again. Also, since you are very resourceful are there any sources of information you recommend or wish someone told you as a junior officer? Thank you! :-)

Random thought of the day: It'd be nice to be a Navy Flight Nurse...anyone else have the same or similar interest in critical care as me? Cheers

I hear the navy only takes a handful of flight nurses for their program yearly. The Air-force does more of flight nursing transport than a lot of other branches from what I hear. There's a great TV show of (I think) Army Nurses in Afghanistan working as flight EMS crews. Looks like awesome stuff. I have my eye on a possible CRNA or NP future, myself; although the thought of being a flight nurse tickles me as well. haha

Haha, I know I am interested in critical care in general. Sometimes I see myself on a plane working transport while other times I can see myself writing prescriptions as an NP or working on a Field Fleet team (not sure if that's the right name) but yeah...I'm a bit ADD yet I at least have it narrowed down to critical care .
