Ok, so we will be stationed at Keesler and leaving in October. We've decided to buy a house in the area since we will be there at least three years. Does anyone have a real estate agent that they would recommend or any that they would not recommend? Also what is the average BAH for the area? I found a website that allows you to put in rank and zip code, but I was just wondering what the average was to see if the website is correct. When we move I will be quitting my job of course, so we want to make that we don't get into something we can't afford on just his salary, since we don't know how long it will take for me to find a job. Also can anyone recommend nice neighborhoods to start searching for housing? Since we are in NC, we probably won't be able to go down there and look so it would be nice to start off with places that we know will be in a good neighborhood. My aunt is in the area and is more than willing to go look at houses once we pick a few.

I am heading to Keesler as well and Ocean Springs has been suggested from a few people I have asked.

Housing is nothing spectacular however, they really pay high insurance rates around $4000 per year for a home in the 175-200k range plus taxes an all. I have been told to carch a break on the insurance you need to live at least an hour from the beach.

Sadly, the more I read and learn about Keesler the less I want to go there. Especially now with the oil covered beaches....

A friend of mine says the Gulf area is known as the "Redneck Rivera"

Well we are originally from MS, so nothing will surprise us. It does suck about the oil spill though. It's really disappointing especially with the area not fully recovered from Katrina as is. Thanks for the link. I also found www.dorismorgan.com. She has a lot of property listed below $150K in what looks like nice neighborhoods. I may give her a call in the next few weeks.

Don't worry too much about the rednecks. Don't let the ignorant ones taint your opinion about the state as a whole. I know it's easier said done though.

That website is correct - it's the DOD website and they're the ones who set the rates. You won't get better information that that.

I grew up and currently live on the MS Gulf Coast. Keesler is about 25 minutes from my house (which is for sale!) Many individuals who work at Keesler live in the surrounding cities of Gulfport, Long Beach, Pass Christian, Diamondhead, and Ocean Springs. Insurance rates south of interstate 10 are higher than if you purchased a house north of I-10. I currently live about 2 miles north of I-10 and pay $2200 a year in insurance for my house. My real estate agent is great if you are interested. If I can be of any help to you just let me know!

Oh-one other thing. There is no oil on our beaches right now. The media irks me.

OMG - amazing what hurricane country will do for you.

My aunt lives in Gautier and she warned me about the insurance premiums. It really changes how much house you can afford! I don't think I have made it to PM status yet, but you can send me one with the information about your house. Who is your real estate agent?

I am inserting the link to take you to the MLS listing for my house. My agent is included in the link. Try browsing wlox.com, homes, and search the MLS for a listing of houses for each city. Personally, (if you didn't like my house, of course) I would look in the North Gulfport area because there are a lot of businesses surrounding that area and new housing developments. This is also an area north of I-10, so you are going to pay the lower insurance rates.

Travel - your house is lovely!

Coldwell Banker has a military relocation team that will help you with selling your house on your end and with finding a new one when you transfer. Did your realtor tell you about that?

No, she didn't, but I will be sure and ask about that! Thanks!
