I have been following the thread for FY 2013 Air Force nursing and realize that many of the clinical nurses, including myself, were made alternates for FY 2014. The only information I have received from my recruiter is that I will find out sometime in April or May if I am selected or not. Has anyone received more detailed information about the upcoming boards? What is the likelihood of selection for us alternates?

I am also interested to hear from anyone currently serving as a clinical nurse in the Air Force who can describe the day-to-day life and current news regarding the nursing specialty. I am 28 years old, have been an acute care RN at a level I facility since 2008, served seven years in the Army National Guard, and am a family man with two children. My wife, also an RN, and I are excited that I am an "alternate" for FY 2014 because it seems likely I will be selected. We have anxieties about active duty because I have never served on active duty.

It is excruciatingly hard to get any info on the NP program. I'd love to hear what anyone knows about its competitiveness and anything you've heard regarding the board review.

Also, do they take alternates for all the NP specialties? My application is sitting in Texas awaiting to be reviewed by the board for CNM. My recruiter told me there were 4 applications there now and only 2 slots. Any idea how long it takes for them to review the applicants?

Also if anyone can clarify this I'd appreciate it!

Still have not heard anything about alternate selection for FY 2014 Clinical Nurse. I emailed my recruiter today for any news.

I am also an alternate for October 2013. According to my recruiter, being an alternate is as sure as a select. I am even putting my house on the market :) I applied as clinical nurse even though I work on cardiac critical care. I have worked on med/surg floor, so I think I would be ready to go as a clinical nurse but would require more training to work on ICU setting. Once I start working as AF nurse, then I will seek to move to critical care setting. I am trying to be positive here, working out and making plans for October departure :)

I wouldn't make too many big changes yet. I don't know how they do it for fully qualified nurses, but the alternates (even alt #1) haven't been selected from the July 2012 NTP board.

My recruiter stated the same, that being an alternate is as sure as being a select... the difference is waiting for the slot to open. So I am not in a rush to prepare. It is nerve wrecking to wait and I would love to get my home listed and all that good jazz but I don't want to jump the gun either in case I am not picked up this fall. Just my opinion but either way I hope it all goes well for us all and we are all picked up this fall since none were selected this past March. Good luck to all and I hope we hear some good news soon! :-)

My thinking is, if I wait until the last time to sell my house (and given how the market is friendly now to sellers), it might take forever to sell. Plus not knowing where I might end up, selling the house then might be tricky. But if I sell now, I can live in an apartment and wait for selection. Worse case scenario, I might not get selected this Oct and be moved to March. I will still stay in the apartment until then. Plus it is my nature to make a decision and go with it. It does not mean that I do not think about things but that is how I am and strongly not planning for October departure would be against my nature. Some people might call that ignorance, I call it indecisive. I have moved 3 times and all those 3 times, our houses sold within months..the last one sold within a month. By God's grace we somehow dealt with these sellings/buyings in good market times. Recruiter would have to have lied to me, that an alternate will be selected next time there is space/room but I do not believe that is the case. So as things are now, I can handle what I can control and leave the rest to timing and preparation. If that makes sense :)

Bayern,

My wife and I are also planning on selling our home. We are fortunate to be in a "sellers market" as well. The last thing I want is to have a mortgage payment after finishing COT :) I am hopeful for all of us alternates. Your positive attitude surely helps deal with this long wait period.

Hi everyone. I am also anxiously awaiting the new numbers to be released, I was an alternate for the HPS FNP. Waiting is really hard! Wishing everyone the best of luck and really hoping alternates will become primary's for FY14.

Im active duty doing NECP so I will automatically going to NTP after graduation in August. Im still waiting on word for FY 14 NTP info. Last email I got said they have tentative dates but they haven't been blessed. Anyone else heard anything?

My recruiter emailed me yesterday. I was excited to open the email thinking that it must certainly be the good news that I am selected. Instead, when I opened the email it was just my recruiter wishing me a happy nurse's week. Of couse its nice of her to wish me a happy nurses week but it would have been nice to get the "you are selected" email instead :)

My recruiter told me that there is a rumor that there will be 40 slots this next board.
