I have been following the thread for FY 2013 Air Force nursing and realize that many of the clinical nurses, including myself, were made alternates for FY 2014. The only information I have received from my recruiter is that I will find out sometime in April or May if I am selected or not. Has anyone received more detailed information about the upcoming boards? What is the likelihood of selection for us alternates?

I am also interested to hear from anyone currently serving as a clinical nurse in the Air Force who can describe the day-to-day life and current news regarding the nursing specialty. I am 28 years old, have been an acute care RN at a level I facility since 2008, served seven years in the Army National Guard, and am a family man with two children. My wife, also an RN, and I are excited that I am an "alternate" for FY 2014 because it seems likely I will be selected. We have anxieties about active duty because I have never served on active duty.

2G219,

You won't hear anything on the boards until roughly 2-3 weeks after they meet at the beginning of October. I think they are still QC'ing the apps right now...I just cleared that portion last week (seeing if anything is missing from the app). I've heard October 21st is the current release date.

I'm applying for clinical nurse so I can't really tell you anything about critical care specifically.

I don't know if anyone knows specific numbers because I'm pretty sure Congress hasn't passed a budget yet. Obviously if anybody knows more than I do feel free to chime in.

I was also told Oct 21st would be the release date. It will be interesting to see how/if the FY2014 budget will effect the number as well as loan repayment/bonuses. I know I sure could use some more money towards my loans

Time seems to be dragging now! It feels like life is on hold. I am thankful that I have a great job to keep me busy

I wouldn't worry about the bonuses. They may get smaller, but I suspect they will continue to exist. How would they convince people to sign long-term contracts otherwise? Everyone would just sign-up for 3 years at a time, creating continuity issues, and even more money would be lost training replacement personnel. Without the bonuses, you would also have to worry about losing good people to the civilian sector.

Pay does not have a whole lot to do with my decision, but being a NP grad from a private college I do have a lot of student loan debt.

I would taking a slight decrease in base pay but with all the extras (BAH, BAS, healthcare, etc) I will actually get a bit of a pay bump. Looking at long term it is a very smart financial decision.

But most of all my husband and I just miss the Air Force!!

Does anyone happen to have the COT uniform checklist? I've been trying to access the OTS website but it keeps showing a server error. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I also reapplied and I have been able to not think about Oct 21 but I have just started counting the days. I went through this before and was hoping not to do it all over again. I am hoping for a direct selection this time and not to be an alternate like last time. All the best.

I got an email from my recruiter today and before I opened it my heart was racing :nailbiting: but It was just a generic e mail saying that my package if ready for Oct 1st...Not too much longer!!

To those who have done this before...was the estmated release date accurate or did you hear sooner or later?

I remember that horrid wait! I've been in 3 years. It took me almost a year to get in fully qualified. I'm a M46N3e (critical care). I see someone is applying for a critical care position - we are critically manned. I think if you are qualified, you can count on a position. You just have to wait for it.

My wait experience: Package went in October 28.

I had thought I would get in for a January COT and would be told in November that I got in - I didn't get any - ANY! - reply until the following April. And I went to COT in May.

good luck to all you fighting to get in!

Midinphx,

I am applying for a critical care position for the October board. My recruiter sent my info to ensure that I qualify for a fully qualified critical care position and the answer was yes. What is it like being a critical care RN in the Air Force? I am curious to hear any information you can share from COT, to your first duty station, to where you serve now. Like others on this forum I am counting the days/hours until we hear the results of the October board and any information that a current Air Force nurse provides is greatly appreciated! Getting selected will be a complete "life-changer" for myself, my wife, and my children. How did your life change since being selected?

Not to disappoint anyone, but just because a specialty is needed doesn't mean there are funds allocated to hire. I'm not critical care...med/surg actually. However, my recruiter did have qualified ICU nurses wait-listed from the February 2013 board; they were never picked-up and had to reapply for this October board. The chief nurse I interviewed with in August even commented on how difficult the application process is...evidenced by the fact that the guy she interviewed just before me was a critical care nurse who was reapplying.

Only 3 more weeks till you know for sure.

So has anyone heard if the board is meeting today? I am wondering what id going to happen with the shutdown. I am thinking of emailing my recruiter to see if he has heard anything

I just e mailed my recruiter and he said that they were still reviewing packages today :nailbiting:
