Army Nurse Corps FY2013

Specialties Government

Published

Hey everybody, I'm starting a thread here for those applying to the Army Nurse Corps in FY2013. I figure this might be a good place to get to know other future nurse corps officers and a place for the veterans of the ANC to pass on some advice.

Share your story and hopefully we will meet down in San Antonio this Winter/spring of 2013

Ill start with my story,

I am a 28 y/o critical care nurse with 2 years experience in a level 2 trauma center in Virignia. I passed MEPS at Ft. Eustis and have submitted security packet, letters of reference and letter of intent.

I am applying to the October review board for Active Duty Army Nurse Corps for the 66H8A(critical care) and 66T(trauma) programs( I am not sure if they are still running this one, but you don't get what you don't ask for).

I am happily married with a baby on the way, my wife is 100% behind a move the Army and I feel blessed to have her love and support.

The road to the Army has been a long one with a degree in Biology, stint as a drug rep and return for an accelerated BSN.

I love being a nurse and love working in critical care. I hope to serve my country in uniform treating service members & their families at home and in forward deployed units.

I want to be an critical care nurse and officer in the U.S. Army and I hope that I will get to meet all of you in uniform at BOLC, at MEDDAC, CSH or FST in CONUS or OCONUS.

Here's to all us achieving our dreams of becoming Army Nurses!

HOOOOOOAH!

I went to BOLC with a lot of new nurses who were prior service. Not sure if any of them did AECP, but the process should be pretty similar for commissioning as far as getting acclimated into the Nurse Corps. For the Nurse Transition Program (NTP, the training for new nurses), you will likely be at a MEDCEN -- pretty sure all the new grads I knew went to MEDCENs. Your orders should include your first duty station -- you should know your final destination before BOLC because you'll probably get orders TDY en route. (Note there is a lot of "likely, should, probably" in my response. Haha.) I think the NTP is at least 6 months.

A little update for me:

I commissioned on the 1st of Nov, and was advised to sit tight and wait for orders. A few weeks went by and I called, and they had the orders in the recruiting office. No mention of how long they had them though!

I'm going tomorrow with the recruiter to pick up some uniforms. I can go on my own to get an ID card. There is no Army post for hundreds of miles, but there is Balboa Naval Medical Center that has an AAFES store with Army uniforms.

I'm not sure what the next step will be after uniforms and ID. My home unit is about 12 hours away but I am attached to APMC; most of my drill should be with a local unit.

Hey guys. I am new to this site but wish I would've seen it sooner. I also applied to USAGPAN and got accepted and sent my packet for the board on November 5. I got told on Thursday November 29 that I made the OML list. I, like everyone else, was told by my recruiter that they do not know the order of those on the OML. He told me there were 22 applicants, 10 got selected, and 3 made the OML. I am devastated at this point because I wanted this so much. I don't have a lot of experience as an RN but I feel like the time I've spent has been very valuable and I have learned more than I could've imagined.

I am prior service airborne infantry actually with 2 combat deployments. I got out to further my education and got my BSN. I have been an RN in a MICU of a Level I trauma center for 1.5 years. I also did an internship in the same ICU for a year during school before graduating. My GPA wasn't the best but definitley not bad at 3.70. I am just curious as to what they look for in the selection process. I figured it was the experience factor but if I'm reading correctly they had two separate lists based on >2 years and

At this point I am just hoping that there is a chance someone that was selected has a change of heart and decides not to join. Thank you for all of your posts as reading these tonight has helped me some. Like I stated earlier, I only wish I had seen this sooner because I have been stressed to the max waiting on the results like everyone else. Let me know if the information I have received is correct and if anyone has any new information regarding the OML.

Dude, relax. You may not have gotten in....... ORRRR there may be other things at play that you and your recruiter are not aware of. If you are on the OML there is a chance they are just waiting for funding to pick you up. I don't know if USAGPAN accessions are in the same "pot" as the rest of the nurses... I do know that there are empty seats in the classroom.........

I am 27 but will be 28 next month.

I'm trying to relax. I guess I just had my hopes set high and then heard "OML" and immediately thought the worst. Especially when my recruiter didn't really sound very confident in the fact of me having a chance of making it in this year. He also may not know how it all works to the fullest either. I have found out more just by reading these posts.

I asked your age to preface this, you are still decently young and there is always next year, and in the mean time you could work on your nursing experience. What kind of critical care nursing experience do you have? If it is a year or less, that may be the problem you may just need to work on getting more critical care experience. There is always next year if you do not get chosen. Thank your for your service by the way.

Hi all....it has only been two months since MEPs to this point for me, but it feels like the longest 2 months of my life! haha. I am still anxiously awaiting any word about the scrolling process and checking on here to see if any of you have heard anything either, as it appears many of us are in the same boat just sitting and waiting to be commissioned. I am working out daily (ugh) and have given my employer a heads up on the changes to come, but am nervous as I am making all of these life changes and am not even officially in the Army yet. I would love to hear something by X-mas so I don't have to continue to respond to people who ask with "I have no idea when, where, how, etc." Just wanted to pop in and say hey and thanks for everyones posts...they are so informative and reassuring!

Brandonscott116, The actual breakdown was 25 applicants. 10 selected, 14 on the OML and 1 non-select.

I too am on the OML and awaiting word. I spoke with LTC Weisgram and it sounds like they are trying to get at LEAST ten more seats but they need to get the top ten squared away before they can request more seats. It is incredibly hard to relax, I feel ya.
