Army 1st duty station

Just wondering when everyone learned where their first duty station was going to be. How soon after commissioning? Or did most of you have to wait until OBC?

Also when did you learn what floor or clinic you were to work on? Did you have any options or were you just told where you were going? And is there any difference between new nurses and nurses with experience?

One more-is there a list of the forts we can choose from as an experienced nurse?

I'm surprised there has been no response to this question. I thought this site had a lot of active duty army nurses. But I guess there is just a lot of us that have questions with almost no one that can answer them:cry:.

i went from the reserves to the active side of the house, but i learned where i was pcs'ing to approximately 2 months after i found out my packet was accepted (for ac). one of the maj from branch called me up and asked if i wanted to go for an unaccompanied tour to korea. when i asked if i could go anywhere else, i was told right then and there! later on, i received my rfo (request for orders) in my ako account with all the specifics of my pcs

"also when did you learn what floor or clinic you were to work on?" when i completed my in-processing at the army medcen. since i had mega years of critical care nursing under my civilian and reserve belt, i was placed in the combined intensive care unit

"did you have any options or were you just told where you were going?" as i stated above, you can always ask or request. but everything goes according to the needs of the army. there are several 66h8a officers that started out with me in the icu but they are now pulling their weight in the ed (short staffed). do they like it? no, but....orders are orders.

"one more-is there a list of the forts we can choose from as an experienced nurse?" for your first pcs branch will consult your "dream list" and you might get lucky. for each additional pcs, and depending upon the amount of time you have in (tis) you do get some say in where you are to pcs next.

thanks. the big difference is that a brand spanking new graduate 66h (usually a 2lt or 1lt) will usually do an internship (unless things have changed) at a major medcen.
