    Hi everyone,
I also was a Corpsman- class 82-005!That was 1982 and I was active duty from 81-85.It took me awhile but in 1988 I challenged the LPT board in CA and passed first try.I worked for many years as a CNA and LPT then got tired of psych and took the LVN exam and passed this too-2003!I then went the Excelsior College route and finally at 46 years of age I got my ASN and just passed the NCLEX-RN too!!.I am so pleased and am thankful to the many folks who have helped me and inspired me along the way and especially to the Navy for teaching me the right way of doing things.I am open to making new friends here in San Diego,Calif-any corpsman out there who want to communicate and help further education-I am considering doing my BSN.Am also open to helping others with Excelsior questions/advice.Such a great site-I am glad I joined.Later Robert
Can you tell me what Excelsior requires from us? I'm an Army Medic, and really want to become a nurse. The nursing program we have would require me to be a SGT, and I am a SSG. I used to be Marine Infantry from 1987 - 2000, and in my experiences the Navy Corpsman will always be the best in my book. I became a medic because I have always admired you guys. I tried to go Navy, but the recruiter could not promise me Corpsman only Boatswains Mate, so I went to the Army instead. I have worked with Corpsman in Iraq and there is still that level of professionalism that I have always remembered. So thanks for being Doc!!!

I know that California does. Check the Board of Nursing in the state you are going to reside.

Congrats!!! I am impressed that you did it while on active duty. I did the same and it was not easy!!!!!! Are you going to stay in, try to become an officer, or get out.

I was an 8404 Corpsman for 13 years and got the boot after an accident I sustained in K-Bay. I was definately not ready to become a civilian so quickly. I tried to challenge the NCLEX-LPN here in NY, but found out the hard way that NY state doesn't recognize the Navy Corpsman Program as adequate education for an LPN.

For any Corpsman out there from NY State looking to broaden their horizons, make sure you look into your NYS Veterans education benefits. If you have done time in the Gulf you are eligible for 98% college tuition at any SUNY school or you may go to any school and receive the tuition equivilant to the SUNY tuition. I will be attending college this January in a 2 year RN program and pocketing my GI Bill as NY State pays my way.
