Air Force Nursing 2013

Hi everyone,

I just recently started the process to apply to be an Air Force nurse. I'm trying to complete my packet for the January 2013 (Feb 19-Board, Mar 08-Decision). Anyone else currently starting or in the process? Any advice with gathering my information?

Any current Air Force Nurses that could give me insight about their experience, especially regarding their first assignment?

My husband is about to separate from the Army and we are used to that way of thinking and doing things (i.e. lots of misleading information, less family oriented, less options regarding career). My recruiter had mentioned that everyone goes into a general clinical nurse slot, but is given the opportunity to specialize into a department of their choice after one year. My initial response was "Yeah... riiighhhttt." I don't actually believe that I would be given such a choice so soon, but I'm not sure if that is only because of our experience with the Army. Can anyone enlighten me??

Thanks!!

I graduated BSN from Texas Tech and also plan on starting their distance FNP program part time in the fall... Lots of plans this year lol im a sucker for a full schedule! I have a total of 4 years nursing experience most on a telemetry unit as charge. I only transferred to ICU in April of this year. So you can see why I am hesitant to apply for critical care with only 20 spots lol. Has anyone heard anything or know anyone going critical care route?

BVFD,

So there is a board for january and february? maybe the board for january is really in february. I'm so confused!!! LOL.

I'm confused with you kdazzle!

From what my recruiter told me, the deadline for the february board was sometime in January, then the board was scheduled to meet February 19th and the decision was March 8th. I thought those numbers BVFD got us were for the entire FY2013. My understanding was they set aside so many for each board but that it tops out at 80 for Clinical, 20 for Critical care, etc. Therefore, it is most beneficial to get in to the first board of the year (November '12) and get harder as the fiscal year went on. However, my recruiter did say not to focus on the numbers cause the AF will take as many qualified canditates as they choose. Am I wrong?

hey Jilly,

That makes sense cause my recruiter Told me I would find out results in March and I was wondering why the boards would be in january and the results take two months to find out cause usually it only takes a month tops (at least in my experience from the last boards). I just want March to get here!!!! Thanks for giving me those dates cause I didnt even know those. LOL. I have heard in the past that the AF can take extra as they wish, so you heard right on that I'm sure. Talk to you soon.

BVFD 333,

Hey girl, how did your interview go? Let us know how it went. Talk to you soon.

I am currently waiting on a response from my boards, the results were supposed to be back on the 19th but because of Thanksgiving everything is delayed. I applied for the critical care RN position. I am a 28 years old nurse with 2.5 years experience at a heart and vascular hospital. I have 3 kids and I am married. I am very active in my hospital; I participate in shared governance, aspire and those kind of things. I was disqualified at MEPS for a sulfa allergy. It took awhile but I was able to get my waiver. I have only heard positive things about AF nursing. I will let you know more once I know more. The CN that interviewed me did say that she likes it when your hair is pulled back off of your collar. I hope that helps!

Welcome Amarn! I'm wishing you the best with this upcoming decision. How nerve wrecking. I'm already anxious and I haven't even submitted my packet yet. I have the CN interview on the 4th. After that, it will be a long, exhausting wait until March.
