Air Force Nursing 2013

Hi everyone,

I just recently started the process to apply to be an Air Force nurse. I'm trying to complete my packet for the January 2013 (Feb 19-Board, Mar 08-Decision). Anyone else currently starting or in the process? Any advice with gathering my information?

Any current Air Force Nurses that could give me insight about their experience, especially regarding their first assignment?

My husband is about to separate from the Army and we are used to that way of thinking and doing things (i.e. lots of misleading information, less family oriented, less options regarding career). My recruiter had mentioned that everyone goes into a general clinical nurse slot, but is given the opportunity to specialize into a department of their choice after one year. My initial response was "Yeah... riiighhhttt." I don't actually believe that I would be given such a choice so soon, but I'm not sure if that is only because of our experience with the Army. Can anyone enlighten me??

Thanks!!

Any idea whether they usually have nurse-midwifery HPSP slots?

Hi gabookworm,

They have MSN level Midwife slots available for the Air Force right now. My recruiter had advised me that they are in great demand. You should contact a healthcare recruiter. Good luck.

I'm just offering what my recruiter has passed onto me... take it with a grain of salt. I am an NTP alternate for OB. I was told that all boards have been cancelled for the rest of this fiscal year and that their plan is to select from their alternate lists instead of holding more boards. Yay for me! Additionally my ultimate goal is to become a CNM and my recruiter is aware of this. He has also recommended that if I'm tired of waiting to go ahead and apply for an HSPS and I would have a great chance of getting selected. CNMs are needed and currently they have scholarships available. Again, YAY for me!

Actually got a call today from my recruiter today and he basically said the same thing. I am alternate # 2 for med-surg. He indicated that there will not be any more board meetings for the year, instead they will be filling up the open slot for NTP with people on the alternate list with people with less that 6 months experience. For those people on the NTP alternate list with more than 6 months expirience they will have to wait for fully qualified slots.

Here is the actual email that was sent to the recruiters from the HQ:

ALCON,

Currently, we're sitting on 39 NTP med-surge alternates and 7 NTP OB

alternates.

Since we have identified our combined FY13 FQ Clinical and OB Nurse goal of

40 (with 3 alternates and 33 apps in house for 13NC02), there are no slots

to roll the "NTP alternates that have gained 6 months of AFPC-approved

experience" into FQ selects. These folks will have to settle for the next

sequential FQ alternate spot. With that said, we expect to roll over FY13

FQ NC alternates into FY14 FQ NC selects once we receive the FY14 goal from

SG1 (in Mar-Apr).

We also expect to roll over the remaining NTP alternates that have not

attained the 6 months experience into FY14 NTP selects once we receive the

FY14 goal from SG1.

Be mindful of items that might have expired since initial application

(licenses, certifications, physicals, etc).

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Respectfully,

W. Frank Rawls, SMSgt, USAF

PrinceRNAF,

I have been following the thread for FY 2013 Air Force nursing and realize that many of the clinical nurses, including myself, were made alternates for FY 2014. For those of us looking at FY 2014, I have started a new thread titled, "FY 2014 Air Force Nursing". The link is as follows, https://allnurses.com/government-military-nursing/fy-2014-air-824631.html The only information I have received from my recruiter is that I will find out sometime in April or May if I am selected or not.

Hello All~

I was selected during the March board as a CNM. I am scheduled for COT on 19 August. I got my 2nd choice for my assignment at Eglin AFB, FL. I am super excited! I'd love to connect with any others with an August COT date. Good luck for those waiting for the next boards. Don't give up. It took me 3 years due to having less than attentive recruiters.

Hello, Lovecnmnp!

I was selected to attend COT august 19th as well! We should definitely connect. I sent you a friend request so that we can message and exchange emails. Hope to hear from you soon!

How long does it take to get the packet processed. I mailed my packet to my recruiter a week ago. can't reLly do a Face-to-face meeting because it's about a three hour drive from the recruiting station. Basically, over the phone, he asked me if I was really sure that I wanted to join the AF. Asked a few general questions and told me that next board meeting is in October. At what point in the waiting process will I be given options as to what type of nursing I will do in the service. I was a new grad ICU nurse and am now doing the ED full-time. I would like to go in doing ICU again over the ED. I don't have my CCRN, but will be taking my CEN. Any suggestions?

CONGRATULATIONS to you ndsrn! What a journey to get here. And to think this is just the beginning! :smug: I've accepted the friend request.

Lovecnmnp,

Apparently I cannot send messages until I have posted enough times on this site, Which I have not done. So I created this email as a starting point and we can exchange actual emails from there. [email protected].

That is too funny ndsrn, I'm in the same boat regarding the posts. Mine is [email protected]. Talk to you soon!

Obigdog26, the packet time depends on how fast you fill it out and then the recruiter processes it. There is also multiple steps in the packet/application process. I don't think that there is a set time frame as long is it is completed for boards. After your recruiter reviews your info they will let you know what options you have such as position and rank. The paperwork you sign will say what position and rank that you are applying for. Make sure to keep up the certifications that you have. I hope this info helps.
