Wound Debridement


I was just wondering who does wound debridements in Long term care facilities?? Is it within an RN's Scope of practice to do Wound debridement!! thanks for your help

At the LTC facility I work at, the doctor does it.

physical therapist do it at our facility? Doctors orders of course

the MD usually does it where I work as well. I haven't seen the nurses do it unless they are working the Burn Unit.

as long as it is not surgical debridement we are allowed to do it.

Get the maggots to do it - very clean and efficient. No, I'm not kidding, they make a lovely job of it, as long as the patient can tolerate the idea of maggots. Best debridement I have ever seen!

you know, I have heard soooo much about this and yet have never brought myself to ask a doc for an order of maggots.....but let me tell you, I have worked with and continue to treat wounds that may benefit from this. do we have any websites or some more info on this so I can research a bit?? and thanks for the advice, Ill let you all know how it works.

We use maggott therapy for wound debridement and have great results. Here's a link with some info :

In many LTC's the physical therapists do wound care and debridement. Nurses are doing it more since PPS as the LTCs do not want to pay therapy for that service anymore.
