Where are all the nurses?

So I read posts here which bemoan the fact that new grads can't get jobs. Where do they all live? I have 2 32 hour positions I have not been able to fill. My facility is only a year old....looks like a hotel. Our staffing is better than any other skilled facility around. I'm saying...the nurses do meds, treatments, and charting..that's it --for 20 residents days and evenings. I have one nurse for the unit on 11-7. Why do I keep reading about all these new grads who can't get hired and I can't find enough nurses to fill my shifts? My pay scale is as good, if not better, than the other facilities around. What do I need to do to attract some good nurses?

Once we were able to post jobs on this site... I don't think you can anymore. Maybe AllNurses should reconsider?? Seems like a lot of people posting cannot find work.

I hired 3 new grads. 2 worked one shift and then got a job closer to home. The other one just doesn't get it and argues when nurses with 25+ years of experience try to show her how to do things. My facility is in Massachusetts....you can walk to the Atlantic Ocean....tell your friends!!!

Sounds like a great place - too bad I live like 700 miles away. You sound like you're a great boss, too, from your posts.

I think your target should be experienced nurses not new grads. This is only to be honest, but as new grads yes, we want that shiny job at the big hospital in our specialty of choice....well at least a lot of us anyways. LTC/skilled facilities are rarely the shiny new dream job we have all been working for. I do understand that dreams dont come to you overnight. I'm a new grad and have worked in a LTC facility for only a week now, they describe there facility the same as yours but still I went home the first night in tears. I know being there isn't getting me anywhere near my dream of being a womens health NP...I have a intereview for a major medical center next week that isn't in my specialty of choice but just being there would be a step in the right direction...it's a lot easier to transfer units then to get into the hospital of choice....so I think new grads are looking for that rather than what you facility offers

Too bad you aren't a little closer. I'm in Southeastern CT, close to the Rhode Island border. I'm willing to drive quite a bit, but Cape Cod would just be a tiny bit too far.

HA! Please, honey, feel free to speak for yourself. CapeCod, thank you for advertising your willingness to take on new grads. Many of us just feel hopeful hearing stuff like that.
