What do you have on count???

Hello,
I was wondering what other long term care facilities kept on their narcotic counts. We of course have the major Narcs (Vicodan, Percocet) but we also keep Ativan and syringes(Yes, insulin syringes!) on count too. Anyone else???

We count percocet, duragesic patches, oral morphine and morphine suppos's. If it has "looked" like there was a problem (and there were problems at other facilities I worked for) then we counted other meds as well.

We have all the things mentioned above. We also have colace in the pyxis. I guess people were offering it to patients, they were refusing it and the nurses just stuck it in their pocket.

That is what I thought. I have never heard of syringes being counted. We actually have to ask the DON to supply us with enough for a 24 hour period, because we don't have access to the boxes of syringes. If you don't have enough on the weekend, we have to call the DON in to get us some!! As far as I know, there has never been a problem with them....So who knows!

We count all those meds (not syringes though) AND we have to count Ultram because in some facilities it kept disappearing.

Default Keeping Count
We have an ER box which is kept locked - when anything is taken out, the ER box is replaced. No narcs are in the ER Box. The only narcs we have are whatever meds the md's have prescribed for individual residents, and these are kept in the appropriate med cart's narcotic lock boxes. These are counted q shift by oncoming/outgoing nurses. We don't keep any narcs "on hand" to be counted. We don't lock up Ultram or other routine meds...thank goodness. Otherwise, we'd be counting all day!
