MY nurses are the best!

We had one lady who never had any spending money or visitors. Not ever, not one. I found out the aides were chipping in so she could have her hair done every week.

Probably because everyone expects this from nurses. Just like it's expected for you to have to deal with overwhelming workloads, smaller staff to patient ratios, and larger census. I hate to sound so cynical and bitter, but after seeing kind and helpful nurses, who have their own problems give to others worse off and never ask for anything in return; I can't help but think no one realizes what tremendous care is given on a daily basis by healthcare providers. But if there is a fall with injuries, skin breakdown, or some type of infection; (regardless of the underlying factors), that seems to make the news.

I too hope that perhaps one day reality will catch up with perception...

I can write a book with these heartwarming stories- it keeps me satisfied with our profession- after all its the little things that matter so much.
We have a charity fund for buying the patients things that they can't afford like dental care, orthopedic shoes, taxi ride to a family wedding etc. My nurses go above and beyond- buying underwear for a long term patient when we found out she was down to 2 pairs, washing them incessantly - her daughter lost her job and she was unwilling to complain to her- one nurse picked up 2 packages of undies for her.
Nurses do so much more than BP's and Pushing Pills-

These are the kind of stories that helps be proud of my profession. I also wish that they would publish these kind of stories also. Oh well, someday people will want to hear about the good that health care workers do everyday.

I need the source for that ASAP- We have a meeting coming up and I want to include that info
I didn't know it was official (although I suspected it) as I tell my nurses who else responsible for the narcotic distribution and count- not doctors, not the administator and not even pharmacy... NURSES cause we can be trusted. When a pt has a ring or money to hold until the family comes- they trust it to us.(we lock it in narcotics)
