MDS/PPS and four hour rule

I was at a seminar a couple of years ago and believe we were told that is a resident on medicare was at your facility for four hours, you could do a five day MDS and still bill medicare for the day. Does anyone know about this rule? My administrator (who is quite new and young) says no, because they weren't there at midnight.

I never heard of a four-hour rule admission. But anyhow...

"If admission and discharge or death occur on the same day, the day is considered a day of admission and counts as one inpatient day."

If they were in our building for 5 minutes we are required to do a 5 day assessment.
