liabilty issue

by Ms.RN

What if, a nurse working on the same floor but different unit go home without telling another nurse, doesnt give her med cart keys to her or giving report and something happens to one of her patient. Is another nurse responsible for that?

Abandonment. Probably will have license revoked. I don't see how another nurse would be responsible for that.

I would imagine the nurse that left the buildng will be sacked and disciplined by her professional body. Did the other nurse know she had gone?

No, the remaining nurse would not be held responsible for another nurse leaving without notifying anyone, we are supposed to be all things to everyone in LTC, but I dont think they expect us to be mindreaders, yet.

Um....hello? Heck yeah the other nurse was abandoning her patients. What are you to do? I'm sure you are elbow deep in something or running your butt off answereing a bell etc. Like you were supposed to follow them around and know of their where abouts at every minute? LOL....can you tell this has happened to me? I was asked why I didn't stop him from leaving. Yeah...I babysit my other nurse too?

They should be reported to the BON. Was this in the middle of the shift?

No this wasnt in the middle of shift but she left about half hour before the end of the shift, and she is suppose to count narctics and give report to the next shift nurse. Still anything can happen in half hour.

Was there a reason for her leaving early/hurriedly? Accident, family crisis etc?

STill...even if the nurse had to leave for an emergency at least throw the keys at me and say " I'm leaving". I don't think that is asking much. What happened? Did you hear the excuse?

What amazes me is hearing nurses say "My license is in jeopardy if I have to take care of X number of residents" when, apparently, what they don't realize is they COULD lose their license over abandonment.
