Just walked out

I have had it with LTC, I've worked for 2 yrs as the MDS Coordinator/ADON, without the pay because I am an LPN. Anything that needed done I was the go to person, anytime the DON was gone I covered staffing....to many jobs to mention, I just walked out, I guess lack of appreciation, burnout, whatever, I don't know....anyone else? Is it LTC or everywhere, I have only worked in LTC

Unfortunately, nurses all over are asked you take on too many roles and responsibilites that are not commensurate with our pay. There is somebody on this site that has the motto" We will get as much crap as we will take" or something to that effect. You were correct to get out of that unmanageable situation! Best Wishes.

I did it (LTC)for 10 years First as an LPN and like you I covered ALL the spots and did EVERYTHING !!! Then when I got my RN I stayed and was used and abused for another 2 years. You sound like me I was the one to come to and being there so many years I knew more than the DON's and ADON's who came and went every few months. I know I would be offered ADON position that was available but..............

One day I just made a decision to leave and to never ever look back. It's been 9 months now and I do not have a single regret.
I took a job in a hospital (for the first time) and I love it. I do not miss the LTC scene at all. I still get my geriatric pts to care for and I get to give them the attention they deserve at the hospital.

The best was how my DON turned on me and made my last days there misery, she bad-mouthed the hospital I was going to and basically verbally tortured me and tried to get me to stay. Now this was a woman I did all these favors for overs the years and I really had to stand my ground and stick to my guns about leaving.

Thought I might do some per diem at any LTC facility a few times a month but the more I think about the whole LTC scene I decide that Im very happy with my 3-12 hour shifts and 4 days OFF a week !!!! Its a shame because alot of nurses are leaving LTC my unit is filled with former nurse managers from LTC.

Good luck....................

Hey Nursie,

I'm glad that you took a stand for yourself. I just hope walking out instead of giving notice doesn't come back to haunt you.

Any ideas on what you are going to do next?

Honey, I've been a nurse for over 20 years. I've tried administrative work. Unrealistic expectations is in the fine print in the job description. Foget administrative nursing..the only ones that appreciate us are the patients.

After going thru severe burn out, and seroiusly considering a career change (flipping burgers sounded better than nursing,) I now work part-time. I told them when I hired on not to even try to call me on my days off--I have committments: the tanning salon, my latest good book, the gym, my garden... I balance work, rest and play and life is good.

More power to you! There comes a time where you just get tired of being **** on, and you need to look out for #1. Good luck!

I know exactly how you feel. I've had many a day when I dreamed of just walking out and never turning back. I'm the ADON of a 200 bed facility. My other titles include MDS coordinator, inservice coordinator, infection control nurse and the one to go to for all things computer related. About 50% of the time I'm also the day shift supervisor. As to the pay, I can tell you that , since I am salaried, most of the LPN's make more than I do hourly. So what makes me go back? Damned if I know...I just know I've been doing it for 13 years and everytime I get close to making the decision to do something else, I back out. I must be a masochist LOL.
