Human Resources & Staff Development RN

by ckinik

Hello

I would like to inquire if anyone can share any information regarding the Human Resource Department of your facility.
Does your facility have a HR Department/Coordinator and what are their responsiblities? Is this a FT or PT position?
I am presently the Staff Development Coordinator for a 120 bed Acute Rehab/LTC responsible for Orientation, Inservice/Continuing Education and all aspects of HR from the receiving of an application, scheduling the interviews, interviewing viable candidates and than processing background checks, references etc. I am finding this is extremely time consuming, deterring from my other responsibilities;Staff Education,Annual Competencies,Orientation and Employee Health. I would truly appreciate any suggestions /feedback...
Thanks in advance for you thoughts!

When I was Staff Development in a 140 bed SNF, I was expected to do what you're doing. None of the SNF's where I live have separate HR departments. At the place I work now, the ADNS interviews everyone for any nursing job and the other department heads interview for their own departments.

All the SNFs around here DO have HR. We have a fulltime HR director and a fulltime assistant. You have enough on your plate with staff development!

When you can relate your staff development role to patient safety and employee safety, your employer might be more inclined to hire you an assistant, or create another role. If you are not keeping numbers on preventable accidents and injuries, including decubiti and falls, then start now so you can show the difference education makes. I think you have too much on your plate, personally.

Default Right there with you babe

I'm right there with you babe. I started this job a week ago as staff development coordinator. A new position. They just hired a new director of personnel so we both started on the same day. It has been living . I've basically done EVERYTHING like you are.......interviewing,app's,background checks, making sure all the personnel paperwork is there, employee health files(having to go through the whole facility to make sure they are up to date),inservice planning and recording(no one has recorded in a year),keeping up with certifications, new employee orientation, infection control. The first few days I was there I was given the pleasure of keeping up with attendance and in the future scheduling of cna's. So, what is HR's position for? Keeping up with payroll? Anyone can do that huh? Greatly overwhelmed, yesterday, I went to my administrator to ask for the MDS position that is open! Thank goodness I have that experience and am going to do that!!!!!!!
