Do family members know how annoying they can be?

by Ling07

It's like family members automatically assume nursing homes are out to harm their family members. Do they understand the hardwork and dedication it takes to caring for their loved ones?? I think they think it's easy. There are those family members that are thankful. But the ones that are negative and ANNOYING take the cake.
If your 80 something year old mother falls out of the bed, how is that the facility fault??
If your 96 year old mother dies, how is that the facility fault?
If your 80 something year old wife is treated like everyone else, how is the nurse racist?
I don't get it.

I think there're some unrealistic expectations, but they are fueled by denial and guilt.

As long as you and your co-workers are doing your jobs it is not your fault that these things happen. The residents have the right to fall and all the staff members can do is monitor high fall risk as close as possible using what tools that we are allowed to use.

As far as the 96 year old mother dying, she is old and she is sick, therefore she will die. This is a fact of life and many people do not want to face it. Some family members have a more difficult time letting their loved one go than others. Some people in their grief will blame someone for their loved ones death even though that person could not prevent that death no matter what.

Being a nurse in a nursing home is a difficult and many times thankless job. Many people watch the news and think that all nursing homes are like those horrible places that make the news. All we can do is care for our residents to the best of our ability and prove those people wrong.

There are some who demand that the staff only take care of their family member despite being told diplomatically, or otherwise, that the staff has 80 to 151 other residents to care for. They act as if they just don't get it. Well, they don't, and they never will.

I love the family members that come to the front desk and expect everything to stop for them.

I believe it is due to so many people having a major lack of respect for LPN's I work at a level 1 trauma center and I would say about 95% of the nurses would say that they HATE LPN's. And this is heard by patients families. I has a Patients husband ask will there be real nurses(RM's) or LPN's? it is so bad at my facility that I started to ask myself should they get rid of LPN's and just hire specialized RN's at Nursing Homes?

If I hear one more family member say, "I'm an RN."
What did my mother eat today, I'm an RN. My mother likes soup, I'm an RN.
Ok, that's nice, do you want a flower?
