Common meds in LTC?

Hope I'm posting this in the right forum - I was debating between this one & the 1st Year in Nursing Forum.

Anyway, I'm a new nurse starting in LTC & I'd like to brush up on some of the medications commonly seen in LTC. Any input would be greatly appreciated - Thanks!

The link didn't work for me, so here's my input.

BP meds-Lisinopril
Metoprolol
Vasotec
Hydrochlorathiazide

Diuretics-Lasix
Bumex
Spironalactalone

Pain Meds-Vicodin
Morphine
Oxycontin
Methadone

Lots of Sinemet, Neurontin, Potassium, Mag Ox, Anti-depressants and Insulins.

These are many of the most common meds I give just off the top of my head. I'm sure I'll think of many more after I post this!

Congrats on your new position!

Levo's! Lots and LOTS of levothyroxin, levoxyl, glipizide, remeron, ativan, phenergan, procrit inj., duragesic patches, lortab (same as vicodin), abilify (used for psychosis, watch BS's as the psychotropics have been implicated in increasing BS's in some people. We check BS q 3mos in non-diabetics). Don't worry. It doesn't take long to get aquainted with LTC meds. We also keep a nursing drug handbook nearby to check up on meds as well. You'll do fine! And congrats on the new job!

as I work 3rd - we see a lot of thyroid mediciine / stomach medicine - IE levothyroxine/synthroid, Prilosec/omeprazole, protonix, Reglan/metaclopramide, etc. Also we usually give the osteo pills: Boniva (monthly) actonel or fosamax (weekly).

I have seen a lot of the men on flomax, and a lot of people are on the statin (cholesterol) meds.

Pain meds can vary - we have quite a few on Percocet right now, but Lortab/vicodin are pretty common, so are darvocet and ultram. We also have quite a few with prn/rountine nerve pills like xanax, ativan.

Hope this helps

Don't forget ADVAIR -a common drug for COPD, and other inhalers like Albuterol.

Eye drops of all kinds.

A few others that come to mind besides the ones mentioned:
Megastrol Acetate (megace)
Lyrica
B12 - injections and PO.
All kinds of heart meds from Digoxin/Lanoxin to Adacand
Lots of vitamins
Proteinex
