Best way to prepare for what's ahead...

I start working in an LTC facility on the 31st of this month, so any websites, book recommendations or even PERSONAL advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't have much experience in this field. However, I do know that the "homelike" atmosphere in addition to taking care the elderly fits the criteria of where I want to be as a nurse. What are the main things that I should know before I start? ANY information is greatly appreciated, I'm very excited and nervous at the same time. I feel very proud to say that I will be a part of this area of nursing and happy to be a part of this forum.

I just started at a LTC myslef 2 weeks ago- my advise that has been helpful- create a cheat sheet on a census page with little notes on each person- how they take thier meds- whole, crushed in applesauce, ect. Add any other things that help. With 110 residents, and being bounced all over the facility, its hard for me to remember everyone!

That's a good idea, I'm going to do that the first day and study it well.(try to memorize it) That way I can be up to the necessary speed in passing meds AND providing care...my goal is to learn as much as I can in the shortest amount of time, because after orientation, I'm on my own and want to be sure that I'm as safe as can be.

Good thing I found this "area" on Allnurses.

I am about to start a career in Long Term Care Nursing in Kansas.
And I'm a bit anxious about certain things.

1st. How long is the usual orientation? I am foreign-educated, so that may be a negative point (?)..
2nd. What are the usual activities in a LTC? What are the nurse's role?
3rd. What are the common problems that I may encounter in dealing with the elderly?

I hope you guys can help me with this.

Thank you.

Another good thing to do is ask for the roster/ matrix thingy that they give to surveyors when they come in. It gives you a picture of what all the residents have.
Keep an eye on the last survey resulsts too.
