Hello, I am wondering if there are any RN's out there, that work for the state as a surveyor and if you like your job? Can you tell me a little about your job? I have 20 yrs. of nursing experience as a LPN and RN mainly in LTC. Two years ago I began working with the state in our local VA nursing home, and looking to eventually change pathways, within the state. The state retirement benefits are GREAT!!! Thanks in advance.

I also work as a state surveyor and enjoy it so far..I went from acute care hospital setting to a LTC surveyor. I travel quite a bit and am away from home 2-3 days per week. I cannot trade however the benefits and different type of stress that I encounter in this job compared to what I previously was doing. It's rewarding in a different type of way!

I am so happy to know you are a LTC surveyor! I have questions for you:) Do you ever fine for not enough staff for a facility? I also wonder if you question how one nurse can care for (all) the patients safely in the limited time frame of one hour before and one hr after? Im not trying to attack you but I am amazed how many nurses complain on these sites and others yet no one seems to put a reasonable limit to nurse patient ratio. Eyes seem to close to the problem. I love nursing but find it is next to impossible to follow safety quidlines and please your facility at the same time. Who can help?

HealthyNurse, I'm wondering if you took that surveyor job and how things are going now.

I just started a state surveyor job. The training is interesting, though a little tedious. I'm not good at sitting in a chair watching Web-based training all day :) The people in my office seem like good coworkers. Eager to get started.

I too just accepted a position with the state as a state surveyor. I have not started yet but real soon. Not sure what to expect, can you guys help me out with some info...I will be doing LTC surveys....

I have been a state surveyor for a while now. I love it! Yes there is some stress sometimes. But nothing like working in a hospital. Once you get through the academy training you will find that you will live or hate it.

There is a quite a bit of travel. But not overwhelming. I have a fantastic team. And we are a lot like a family. Some squabbles. But it's over soon. Lol. We do LTC. Assisted Living. Adult day cares etc..

I bought an IPad and downloaded all of the Manuel's on it. Sure beats lugging all of those books around. Anything I think will be useful on a survey or investigation. I download. The Manuel's are out there for anybody to read. If you have any questions, please feel free to IM or just ask here. I wish you the best!

Thanks for the comments, CathRN. I am moving right along in training. Getting to know teammates, etc. Looks so good. And I love having real weekends and evenings off!

I am interested in becoming a state suveyer but don't have a clue where to start looking for job openings. I need help. I've been a RN for 19 years and worked as a DON and other managment areas for years. I have always been interested in being a surveyer but no can tell me how to get there. I have looked all over online for my state site and they don't have anything listed for being a surveyer or even how to become one. This has been a dream for years. Can anyone help me? I live in the state of Nebraska.

I would start by looking at your state health and human services website. In Texas, it is DADS - Department of Aging and Disability Services, but each state is different. You might also try CMS - Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, that is the Federal side. I wish you all the best, and if that doesn't work, let me know and I'll dig further for you.

Also, you may want to search for 'nurse' on your state employment website. I searched 'surveyor' and never found anything.

BTW, the surveyor job is going great. Learning a lot. Love visiting small towns in Texas I have never seen before.

I have small children and was just offered a surveyor job. Any advice? This sounds like a deal breaker, according to everyone above. I currently have two job offers on the table and am trying to decide between the two.

As a state surveyor in Texas, I am on the road A LOT.....if you have small children that is something you have to decide. One of my co-workers has small children, but her husband is a stay at home dad. Works for them. I love my job, but fortunately I'm able to travel, our kids are grown.

The state benefits are wonderful!
