Memorial Health in Savannah

  1. I would love to have any insight nurses in the know have regarding Memorial Health in Savannah. I was just there for an interview and it seems lovely, but I wonder about what is going on below the surface? (in particular regarding the Anderson Cancer Institute)
    Am I missing something obvious?
Is it really all peachs and cream?

hey nesher! well, mmc has a rep of having the crankiest nurses known to man. i don't work there, but i work with people that currently work there and hate it, used to work there and left, and i transfer pts there all the time. the nurses on the phone never seem horrible to be getting report on another pt, but you never know on the inside. my son had an mri under sedation there and the radiology nurses were great-even though the whole process was 2 hours behind, not their fault i know. lab and xray wasn't too bad, a little bit of vibe that they would rather ignore you than talk to you but that was just my experience. like i said, you never know until you are there! haven't heard anything about the cancer institute, so good luck! if it doesn't pan out there are 2 other major hosp in the area and more within an hours drive.

Thanks missnurse01 for you response. Why are the nurses cranky?

hello again nesher! i have no clue why they are like that. i think that it just be the bad environ, you know one bad apple and all that. even new grads going in end up with the attitude, cant help it when you are surrounded by it i guess. but like i said, i have never worked there myself-just work with those that have. nothing wrong with trying it out yourself! hosp is not really in a bad part of town, and they pay well and all-so not sure if it is a management thing or what...

It's all peaches and cream when they're interviewing you, but you WILL see that the nurses are all cranky because we are so understaffed all the time and nobody seems to care! Many days, we work short-handed. Some departments will have their nurse mgr come in to help out, but most won't. They don't want to be bothered. All we hear are complaints from the patients about how we're not answering the call light quickly enough. If a patient ever brags on us, we never hear about it! Come to work at Memorial if you think you can make a difference! (We're not cranky to the patients, just to each other!)

    Hi-
We are considering a move to Southeast GA, or Jacksonville Florida. Any advice about where to live or work? How's the nursing situastion in the state of Ga.?

hello krday! i live in se ga, have around in this area 3 times now in the past 3 years...but we finally bought a house so that should settle down for a bit! lots of people commute to work, esp if you work in savannah. i don't think it's the greatest place to live from what i hear, but lots of surrounding communities that are ok i think. savannah has 3 major hosp, all of se ga has no small amt of open nursing positions. there is also the jail outside of savannah, effingham hosp is not too far, there are free standing surg centers in savannah too...lots of places to go. there is also a another hosp in brunswick, which is south of savannah-not as big but everyone seems to smile there a lot! email me privately for more info if you want it or no one else answers your post! good luck on your decision!

    Thanks for the reply, missnurse-
we are traveling down there soon to investigate. I would like to be close to jacksonville. is it true that a high school graduate and resident with high GPA can go to college for free in GA? We are looking for a good school system for our soon-to-be high school age daughter. You mentioned private email--can you include this in your reply?

oops, sorry i forgot my email! it's missnurse01@hotmail.com. i think brunswick is about an hour from jacksonville. one thing about ga, most of the public school systems aren't all that great compared to the rest of the country-but i assume that the more that you put in the better you get out just like anywhere else. as for college, savannah has a couple of 4 year universities i think, or at least one. brunswick has a community college where she could do all her undergrad stuff. don't know where the next nearest 4 year is. you are talking about the Hope scholarship which the ga budget is currently funding DOWN, so don't know how much there will be by the time that your child graduates in 4 or 5 years. i think it used to be if you were a resident, graduated from high school with a good gpa, then you could basically get it. so, not sure how that is going to be in the future. be warned, it is HOT and humid down here...which i personally don't like but i am not from here, so if you're visiting in the summer, you will get a good idea of what it is like!
