Kennesaw State Fall 2011

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

I just applied to Kennesaw State's program for Fall 2011. I thought it would be fun to do a roll call to see who else is out there beginning the waiting game!

Sings&Shoots, do you have a list of books that we need? I usually order mine from Amazon too! Where did you find your list?

I used North Georgia CPR previously for certification. They were very good and used time efficiently. I will sign up for the July 2 class as well. Look forward to meeting you all! :)

Go to Owl Express and click on Registration and Student Records, then click on KSU Bookstore. Then Click on Fall Semester and hit submit. Then click the button that says "Click to Submit Schedule..." It will take you to the bookstore website and have the list of books you need for the classes you have registered for. If you haven't registered you can do the same thing on the KSU Bookstore website, you will just have to individually pick the classes you will be taking. Hope this helps!

I just signed up for the drug test and background check we have to complete. You can go to this website to register: http://www.advantagestudents.com.

They don't have the price posted anywhere on the website. So, just to let you know, it is $78.50. The closest drug testing facility to Kennesaw is Concentra Medical Center at 220 Cobb Pkwy N, Suite 400, Marietta, GA 30062 (just off the North Loop).

Just thought I'd let you all know. :) There is a checklist on the nursing website of everything we need to complete, if any of you want to get a head start. http://www.kennesaw.edu/chhs/schoolofnursing/current/clinical.html

Hey gtqueen, if you haven't done so already, one of my friends set up a non-school sponsored Facebook page for those of starting at KSU this fall. http://www.facebook.com/#!/home.php?...505190726&ap=1

I know the Student Nurses Association set one up for previous students. They may do the same for us, but we wanted to see if we could get to know some of the other students before we started. Most of the people I knew started last Spring or this Summer. I only knew 1 other person that got accepted for the Fall. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone. Especially since we will be spending the next 5 semesters of our lives together!

Haha. I didn't even think about that! Thanks for reminding me! I'll get started on that. :)

Been there done that!

you guys should be getting a letter about a month before orientation about when orientation will be held, and what you need to do for the program. i heard it is august 8th. they'll explain everything about the cpr course, ordering uniforms, and dates to get stuff in. if you want you can do your physical and get your immunization records together. i hope you know that the drug test is not supposed to be done until after the program starts! they will not take it if it is done before the program begins because of the chain of custody.

what do you mean by "chain of custody?" they posted a "new student checklist" on the website. i am following that checklist. i used the company that is listed, and the results are sent directly to the school from advantage. if we aren't supposed to do it until after the program starts, then why is it on the list with all of the immunization and health record information we have to gather prior to beginning the program?

The list is for current nursing students. It is ok to get your physical done, TB, and immunizations taken care of prior to orientation because MS will want that info at orientation; however, you do not do the drug screen and criminal background check, the medcom's etc... until after the program starts. I would give FH or MS a call at KSU to ask about your screen. If you really want to get a head start then grab the book Calculate with Confidence read chapters 1-8, pages 98-104, chapt 10-13 & 14-16 (choose method of calculation, but formula method is easiest in my opinion), chapters 17-20, pages 429, 432-436, and chapter 22 pages 453-66. Drug calculations is your first test, and you need to get at least a 75 on it. It will not be difficult if you prepare for it. I know you guys want to get going, but be patient you will be starting before you know it. If you are not currently in school enjoy it because fall will be very challenging. :)

Definitely start on the calculations. You have to get a 90 to continue in the program but you have 2 chances. You might also want to get an NCLEX study guide and get familiar with the question format.

Hi All!

I started this summer and want to congratulate all of you! Get ready to hit the ground running.

First off, some things you can work on now and get out of the way.

1. All immunizations updated. You can go to the clinic at KSU

2. Sign up for Drug and Background check...DON'T take the drug test. You will take this the 1st week of school

3. Buy the Calculate with Confidence book. And start practicing...You need a 90 on the math test. You can only miss 1 question. What people mess up on are the rounding rules. Look at the KSU handbook for nursing online and it will discuss the rules. If you don't make a 90 on your 2nd try, you have to drop Holistic and you cannot take it until Spring. Unfortunately, what you make the 1st time is what you get as a grade. You can make a 100 so don't worry.

4. Start reviewing your A&P. The physiology part. Patho is no joke so if you haven't had A&P in awhile, brush up on it.

5. Make sure to get your student ID and your parking pass. They won't mention this at orientation

6. Get the health insurance if you already don't have it. Should be listed in the letter you get or one of the emails.

7. For uniforms, they will send the info in the letter and you will order them from Meridy's. They will also have a day you can come to campus to try on sizes since they run big. Buy 2 of the white. Also get the lab coat. You can wait on the black scrubs but I went ahead and ordered them. You will not wear black scrubs your 1st semester.

8. Buy all white leather tennis shoes. I got mine at Kohl's...they have a little grey on them. Don't freak out thinking they have to be all white...the logo can be grey.

9. Buy your stethoscope and get a watch with a 2nd hand

10. Hold off on buying anything that goes in the nursing kit. You will have to buy 2 kits. One is a green bag and the other is a blue bag. The green kit will be used for Health Assessment and Holistic and the Blue kit is for Holistic and your competencies. They need to be purchased at the bookstore on campus.

11. Buy a recorder to record your lectures in Patho. I suggest one that will download onto your computer.

12. Also, find someone to send you the student patho notes from Davis. It's 190 pages but you want to use this. Have them copied and bound. Will cost about $20 but you will use them for every lecture. The notes are literally his lecture word for word.

13. Join your class FB page...you will communicate on this! Also, everyone helps everyone.you are in this together...no competing against each other...You will not survive nursing school if you are not willing to pay it forward.

14. Have fun!!! GEt to know your class and plan things....you need to let loose and celebrate milestones as a class.

After you start the semester, you will have ATI tests to turn in and medcom modules for Holistic. I suggest you work on these early in the semester and get them out of the way.

Also, practice practice practice in lab to pass your competencies. You will have 4 areas of competencies that are pass/fail

1. Range of Motion

2. Asepsis (sterile technique)

3. Med prep

4. Med Admin

Everyone in our class passed at least 2 the first time. Shoot for 2. You get 3 chances. The good thing is that you only have to retest the areas you missed. They will explain in more detail as you start but you will freak out about it. Don't! Just practice. Nursing school is about application. You can't just read it to understand it. Now you want to pass all of them within the first 2 times so you can free up your time to study.

Take advantage of the mentor programs. Also, get involved in the SNA. Someone will need to be elected from your class to be the rep. If you are interested, let them know at orientation. I am sure they will ask.

I know it seems like a lot. Take it day by day if not hour by hour.

Everyone is here to help and we all want you to succeed!!! Best of luck and I am sure I will see you all at orientation!

BTW-Our summer class is the last class that will take summer classes. They have changed the policy since it is so overwhelming to take a full schedule in the summer. Now all classes will take summers off. I am not sure they are going to allow later classes to take anything next summer unless it's a reserach or electives.

When can we sign up for health insurance? I tried, but it said open enrollment is closed.
