GSU Fall 13 Applicants

U.S.A. Georgia

Anybody applying for Fall '13 at Georgia State?

@niqu92, thanks for the encouragement??? It looks like you applied to A LOT of programs. Did someone in admissions tell you that you had a "killer essay and had killer recommendations" and that your GPA was the only issue? What was your core GPA? How did you do on the TEAS? Were these not required at the other schools, or are you simply saying the Georgia State is just more competitive than these other schools you applied to? If this is the case, I would actually prefer to be at the more competitive school, so that I can push myself to keep up with the competition. I think that I know that there's only two answers, yes or no. Unfortunately, I am unable to relocate at this time to accommodate nursing, but I'll put my faith in God and know that everything happens according to his will. Anyway, congratulations on your acceptance letters. And of course the real question you should be answering is how was the nursing program when you started? Any misconceptions you would like to expel or additional information you wish you had already known??

Most competitive often just = cheapest. Myself, I would rather go to the school with the best program, rather than the cheapest. You get what you pay for! Not to say GSU doesn't have a good program, but lets be real here. NYU and UMaryland are MUCH better schools. GSU is highly competitive mainly because of its low cost. I honestly don't get the hype, hf fighting that downtown traffic, ew!

I attend GSU now and my A&P 2 TA got rejected last year with a 3.8 gpa and like a 88 on his TEAS. Great program but superrr competitive. I went to talk to the nursing advisor and she basically shot me down about getting accepted because I had a B in two if my science classes. So I'll probably be applying somewhere else. Good luck to all of you though!

I don't agree with not applying. I applied for the spring with a B in Micro and a B in A&P II and I was wait listed. I was #7 on the ACE list and #10 on the traditional. It never hurts to apply!

Yeah you're right! But my gpa is only a 3.5 and she also told me that wasn't competitive enough :( which I could kind of see, since people with 3.7+ apply to the program... I guess she just kind of discouraged me, but you're right! No harm in trying!

Again, my GPA is a 3.59 overall and a 3.52 science/math and I was wait listed. Don't ever let them discourage you! It doesn't hurt to try. I think they tell people that to cut down the number of applications they have to look at.

Just remember, the worse thing they can say is "No". At that point at least you tried :)

I agree. I have never seen so many downers in my life. For this to be a GSU page and for it to be nothing but a "cheap" school, there sure are a lot of stalkers on this thread. Can we at least get a letter before the avalanche???? Regardless of what school anyone chooses to apply to, I wish you the best. It is totally your decision, so don't let anyone's horror stories or personal opinions deter you. Good Luck everyone!!!!!! :up:

Gracious God after reading some of these comments i am amazed. Everyones case is different. GPA and/or TEAS scores arent the only criteria they consder. People with lower than 3.75 have gotten accepted. the best we can all do is wish everyone bst of luck rather than discourage folks. As for me i know i am getting in by the grace of God even if i have the weakest/lowest GPA and TEAS scores

Good luck to everyone! Hopefully we will be receiving letters soon!!!

I'm so excited/nervous for all of you that applied!!! I'm applying for Spring, so hopefully some of us will actually get to meet eachother! This week is spring break for the school, but hopefully the letters start coming soon!! Good luck to all of you!

Hey guys, sorry just saw the question about the info session. It was mostly a recap of everything that's on the website, not a lot of new information. She did give us the statistics for Fall 12 and Spring 13. Those were:

Fall '12:

Applied=317

Accepted=72

Average GPA

Trad=3.9

Ace=3.8

Average TEAS

Trad=84

Ace=86

Spring '13:

Applied=184

Accepted=72

Average GPA

Trad=3.8

Ace=3.74

Average TEAS

Trad=85

Ace=87

A few other things I didn't know:

-They only look at program GPA (all of the prereqs)

-She said GPA should be above 3.6 to be competitive, that she hadn't seen anyone with a GPA under 3.6 get in in years except for 1 or 2 people with TEAS scores in the 90's. (mine is 3.61, yikes)

-That starting Spring '14 there will be a limit (2) on the number of times you can apply to the program.

And worst of all:

-"Admission decision letters will generally be mailed to applicants during the months of April and May."

Hope that helps!

yes they told me the only problem was my gpa they said my recommendation and essays were excellent, my teas was an 86. All of these were also required at the other schools i applied to and i got in to every school accept gsu. I honestly feel gsu makes it a little too hard for people to get in because unlike most other schools they mainly focus on GPA and go by a point system while other schools focus on the entire package. im not trying to be a downer im just being realistic and telling it like it is. In terms of the actual program itself gsu was the least competitive program i applied to, the other schools i applied to were higher ranked.

as far as how nursing school is,i cant speak on behalf of gsu cause i obviously dont go there so im just going to give advice based off of my program at Univesity of Maryland. The information you learn is not necessarily difficult..the thing that makes it difficult is that theres A LOT of info to learn at once. all i do is study i have absolutely no social life (which sucks because im only 20) but thats the life of a nursing student so you just have to deal. If you dont have a good study habit/method down then you need to get one down now or else you will not succeed. There are some days where i literally feel like i dont even have time to eat because theres just so much stuff to do and most nights i only get 4-5 hours of sleep. Idk how it is at gsu but In my program if you get below a 75% its a failing grade and so many people are failing now because of it thankfully im not. Once you get accepted (and hopefully you guys do!) order all your books asap and start reading ahead, i wish i had done that but..i was being super lazy and didnt lol. For first semester dont rent textbooks actually buy them because your 1st sem txtbooks will be the foundation for everything else you'll learn for the next 2yrs.
