I am a 1st year nursing student at GPC and am having a very difficult time right now with my decision for coming to this school. The program is very unorganized. Here is a list of the problems I have found so far:

1. There are only 2 allowed check-off chances for skills. You are given a PLA which is supposed to be a teaching session of the skill you are learning, but only ends up being the teacher quickly going through what you have to do and then making us watch 80s film reviews of the skill. If you are not successful with the 2 check-offs, you are out of the program

2. For the tests, we are given a lecture 2 to 3 times a week for 3-4 hours. Some of the teachers are very good at expanding on the powerpoints that are shown, but others are strictly by the powerpoint, word-for-word, and do not give any insight into the material we are speaking about. We have just began this past test to have a review with the teachers the day before the test. How this helps, I haven't figured out yet. It would make more sense to have it at least a few days before the test in order for us to study what we didn't understand a little better.

3. A lot of the teachers act as if we are already nurses and should know everything that nurses do. They are not as helpful as they need to be and seem as if it is a hassle to answer questions that we students direct at them.

I know that nursing programs are difficult and not easy, but my question is for those of you that are in programs in and around the Atlanta area. Are your programs as difficult or do you have direction on learning your nursing skills?

I want to know what I am doing and be a smart, caring nurse. I do not feel that GPC is teaching me this. To throw me into clinical without even feeling comfortable with my skills yet is not my idea of teaching. I feel anxiety very time I walk into the hospital because of the uncomfortableness and I do not want that. I want to be a nurse but I think I need to find another program that is going to allow me to learn what I need to know and not just what I need to know to pass a test.

Please help with any advice. I greatly appreciate your time.

P.S. To all those this past spring that tired to talk me out of going to GPC, I should have listened to you then.

Thanks and God Bless

Well I applied the GPC and was accepted but now come to find out, the school of nursing will not consider me b/c I was a previously went to school in N.C. and rec. a "D" in one of my nursing classes (which by the way are not transferable anyway). But b/c of that the program will not look at me at all. I am thinking of going now for dental hyg. but before i say NO to my life long dream I am trying macon state and gordan college.

:uhoh21: OMG that sucks. Was this for Fall 07? Did you just get your letter? Why is it that they already didn't know about the nursing class before they admitted you?

If this is your dream, do all that you can do to achieve it. ;)

Good luck to you!

Dmarie?? I know this was an old question, however I am new to Atlanta and I am trying to find a nursing school. you mentioned you took the LPN course with no wait. can you advise which school you took it? I applied at Atlanta tech and I am on the wait list for 08. I also applied at Dekalb tech. are there any others that you or anyone knows about.

Also where are the other lpn to rn bridge programs because i had planned on going to georgia perimeter but after reading all the post i dare not. I thought that was the only adn program in atlanta.

where is lanier tech? I know this post is old but i am still looking for a good lpn program with not so long of a wait list

Hello everyone, I applied to GPC for the spring semester 2008 but i think I m going to be in big trouble after reading this thread from GPC students' experiences...I have applied for ADN program, any suggestion, should i go there or r there any other community colleges in georgia which r better than GPC???

Great advice. I spoke with others and something that has helped me a lot is to STOP trying to read everything. I was told to take the powerpoint presentations and listen and highlight in my book the section the instructor is going over. Then go home and read the highlighted sections and study for understanding.

The GPC program is doable. I focus on test taking statgies more than anything else. I go to class and pay attention to the lectures and print out the powerpoints. I may skim over the fundamental's book to help clarify lecture objectives but for the most part I do not have time to read. You have to find the best strategy for you. Most of the test questions are application based rather than knowledged based. For this reason I am able to focus on concepts and test taking strategies. Next semester I may have to change my focus and adjust to the new material. Right now my test average is 88.

Thanks for ur advices...I think everything is upon the lecture notes...wat abt lab stuff? Could u really understand wat u r suppose to do in labs? Actually I m new to this country so it's tottaly complicated for me to study in nursing in everyway...u know wat i mean? I m just little too scared of that wat if I give up??? I really don't have any other major chosen as an option...I hope ur advice on how to study in college will help me...

I'm a recent grad of GPC...May of 2008. There are tons of negative reviews about the GPC nursing program. All I can say is that no nursing program is perfect, and there will always be people that are unhappy. I have been working for about 3 months now, only had 8 weeks of orientation, and actually am proud to say that I graduated from GPC. Yes the program is EXTREMELY tough, BUT I really honestly can say that they do prepare you for the real world of nursing. Its not all kicks and giggles BY ANY MEANS. My advice for anyone going to GPC is stay positive, stay away from anyone who bashes the program. They will only bring you down with them! BTW...my graduating class was around 80 students and NOT A SINGLE ONE FAILED THE NCLEX. In fact GPC has a 100% pass rate on NCLEX for the past 6 years. For those who really have a passion to be a nurse, you will do fine at GPC!

Thank you so much for your review of the program!! I admit I too am frightened by some of the things I have read, but in reality every nursing program will be tough and not all instructors will be organized and polite. I will be attending GPC's program in January if I don't make it into KSU's. It's funny because you hear about how great KSU's nursing program is, but I have heard the SAME stuff about it. There are a handful of instructors who are disorganized and expect you to know more than you do. There are seemingly impossible courses. But you get through the program if your goal is to become a great nurse. Same goes for GPC. The only reason KSU is my top choice at the moment is because I already have all the prereqs for a BSN program so I'd rather just get that since the nursing portion is the same amount of time as an ASN (5 semesters). Anyway I wish luck to everyone already in the program and those who have recently been accepted, Congratulations!!!!:yeah:
