Emory Crawford Long and ADN New Grads...

I am just finishing up my last semester clinicals at Crawford Long. Our group heard that Emory Crawford Long and i guess the emory system is working on Magnet Status and that it will mean that less and less ADN will be hired and that BSN will be given preference as a criteria for Magnet Status is the ratio of BSN nurses caring for patients. Does that mean that they will get to a point where they will no longer hire new grad ADNs or just state a preference in the employment listings (like other hospitals here already do) that they prefer new grad BSNs???? Anyone else have any information on this??? This bit of info was coming from someone who is involved in the Magnet Status process for the hospital.

Hey Mex...that seems to be where the trend is heading. I am currently a senior at Emory and from what I am hearing, hospitals all over are trying to make the minimum requirement for hire a BSN. For years I have heard this, even before moving to GA. I am so thankful I decided on a BSN pogram! 88 more days and I am done!

I have also heard that about several hosptials too....But remember the job description does state BSN "preferred" not "required". That being said, if you do manage to get a job interview unlike any other job interview you have to sell yourself. Go to the job interview prepared and with a professional attitude and who knows you may be one of the ADN's chosen over the BSN. I sometimes get the feeling that BSN's feel superior to the ADN's but in all acutality they are not. We take the same test, and simply because we may not have the funds nor the luxury of time to complete a few more classes and write a bunch of papers in APA style...they attempt make us feel unworthy of the title. To all you "superior" BSN's ....."WE ARE NURSES TOO"!!!! One more thing Mex....if you would like to get your BSN...after you graduate and find a great job as an RN, maybe you can get your employer to pay for tuition to become a BSN...the RN to BSN program really isn't that long of a program and you can even do it online...I think about a year. I know that is my plan!!!

Emory was already giving preference to BSNs back in the 1990s - there is nothing new about this.

Mex...aren't you going for your BSN? I thought I remember reading back when we were all accepted that you were going to Brenau.

Can't speak for other BSN's but I can tell ya...as far as superior...no. I feel insane for taking on all this work. I have loved the program and wouldn't have done anything differently. We all learn the same skills and take the same tests. Won't get into current research about ADNs vs BSNs since this isn't a battle about it and it has been battled out repeatedly in the past. I don't much care. As long as you give the same quality of care regardless of the letters coming before the RN. But...if you want a job...ya do whatcha gotta do. That goes for any profession. And no, I am not saying you won't get hired unless you're a BSN.

Me too JoJo_Ga_Girl! I do attend Breanu and I graduate May 9th with my BSN as well...i just like keeping up to date with this sorta stuff! We are almost there...good luck to you! and me for that matter as we will need it!

I will be attending emory in the fall and I wanted to know if you all did an ICU rotation. I also have so many other questions for you, if you don't mind. I need to learn how to PM though. I'm so excited, but I'm also nervous too cause I don't know what to expect.

Not yet...but I'm hopeful. I just got a call from the recruiter at CHOA regarding my new grad application and i will be phone interviewing/screening on Monday. I am doing my practicum in the Scottish Rite NICU in a few weeks so I'm hopeful for any position at CHOA! I love peds!! What about you??

Awesome about CHOA!! They have such a great facility. I was at Egleston for my peds rotation and loooved it. I am a NEAT scholar with Emory so I am going to hopefully get an ICU position at Emory University Hospital. If not ICU, I would love a med-surg floor. Originally started off wanting to be an L&D nurse but fell in love with icky stuff of med-surg.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

That's funny...i'm a CHOA CHANCES scholarship recipient! How else are we supposed to pay for private school education ;) So it looks like you and i know where we will be working just not what unit...Good luck to you too!

HI I just got accepted to emory 09 bsn. I was wondering if you could help me with the NEAT application.. any advice about what they are looking for ( answers to the questions). ANY help will be appreciated!
