hello all,

im a bit down right now...i was accepted to darton as i had a 4.0 in my sciences and a hesi 91.42...i couldnt seem to do good enough on the TEAS or kaplan to get into a RN school in atlanta..so i was excited for my acceptance. ..now i am more stressed and doubting myself about going to darton. I have heard of scores of students failing fundamentals and other courses..and going from 100 people in first class semester down to 40 then only to graduate maybe 10 or 15 people..to me ..i dont know..that is WAY too high loss of students! i am extremely motivated. But i dont have loan money to waste and i would be quitting my job and moving 3.5 hrs away and to be in a program that nearly makes it impossible to pass?? i have never heard of friends in other programs complainign about this issue? it seems so many people repeat their courses! I WANT TO GO STRAIGHT THROUGH! i am just so afraid of relocating to only become another repeater...i dont know..i am smart but im really starting to doubt myself..i just want to be in a program that encourages and assists students on becoming nurses..not weeding out and damaging peoples wils..

Wow Kristen...I'm sorry you feel this way but you have to have faith that you will make it through and be focused to do what you need to in order to be successful. Sometimes school does get tough but anything worth having is worth working for! I have to say to you also congrats on your acceptance into the program and good grades!:) anywho like I was saying too though, not everyone who gets into the program is going through the same thing. Whether it be work, family, or other personal issues vs school. You just have to have your mind made up! School is first and school being first is a temp sacrifice right now.I just pray I get the chance to start school this fall. I'm still waiting for the letter:) (all happy thoughts!) But when I do start school it will be a rough road because I have children who will still need attention. Though it will be hard it is not an obsticle I cannot overcome! Good luck in all of your endevors! I pray you make it through the program the first try!!

I like your positive motivation jbrno8. I also have kids and just got into the program but I have no doubt in my heart. I have a calling on my life to be where I'm at and I know it's not to give up. Even if I didn't choose this as my challenge another challenge awaits down the line so I may as well go for it. If anything comes easy you better find out whats the cost because everything comes with a price tag.

YOU ALL are right. im going to try..its just that maybe after hearing what some instructors had to say..i didnt feel that they really were supportive..that was my main thing. maybe things will change after first day..i just like to feel that the instructors are there to help students and not discourage ...i mean..they had 2 students talk to us out of 3 that had failed first term..and one that was still in her first term!! i mean come on! i think positive reinforcement is always the best route when starting off and that for me really scared me. I dont want to be told i may not make it..but we are here to help you get through. that is all im saying

A little advice about instructors is that some will act tough in front of a class then in their office with just you they act more caring and sensitive. Trust me I got a personal relationship outside of class than in class since I been in college it has never failed. One nursing program once told us that you have to be emotionally stable to care for others meaning you have to not cry or get too overwhelmed about any situation. I hope this help you!!! Now I'm bout to take the kiddos to the park, you gotta luv um!!!!!!!!

To clear some of the crazy numbers up about darton's fail rate. My fundamentals class started with 105, and ended with 39 at the end of the semester. Yes that is a very very high rate. But somthing that people dont understand is darton's acceptance standards are lower than other colleges. Also I don't know of any other college that takes 100 people every semester. For example, Macon State only takes about 35 or 40 each semester. And they normally only lose three or four students throughout the program. So with that being said, other colleges dont have that "high" fail rate because they only take the top 35 with the highest gpa/teas of 200 to 300 that apply. So in a nutshell Darton lets people in who wouldnt have a chance at any other college. And it shows when 75% doesnt of the class doesnt make it through the first semester.

The teachers are helpful if you are willing to look for help. There isnt an easy nursing program anywhere. If nursing was easy there wouldnt be a nursing shortage. So yes the program is hard but if you put in the effort you will be fine.

Thanks for that info, it does help someone like myself just going into the program this fall. I really think the key is to ask for help if you don't know after the teachers have explained it. The teachers stressed to us at our mandatory meeting that we should come to them if we need to. I agree that darton is a college that trys to give anyone a chance that is willing enough to come in an work hard.

I can't really answer that question. I know a lot of people who fail out of med surg one and two. And a lot of people pass. You have to really give it your all every semester.

Hey Kristen82483 I read your post I understand how you feel. God will never give you more than you can handle the reason you got accepted because he knew you can pass the program. The ones that failed probably wasn't giving it their all or had other things going on in their life I pray they don't give up and try again. You have to stay focus and give it your all if you want to pass claim it. I live in Macon I will be attending the Cordele campus start Aug 15. my last day at work is this Friday. I hate to leave because I don't have any support we are in the same boat. I'm not going to let anything or anyone stop what God has called me to do. I have worked to hard to fail. God said he will never leave or foresake you. He can make the impossible possible don't let people scare you or the Darton failure rate determine your success. I would love to hear how you are doing look me up on Facebook my name is Lenesha Dennis. We have to encourage each other.
